Our sincere condolences to Irene, David and Simon and all of Jim's family on his passing. It was such a joy to see his and our dad, Raghnall's, friendship blossom over the last few years. A more dynamic duo Geraldine Street will never see the likes of again. He always had time for a chat and bore his illness with such dignity. Comhbhrón ó chroí libh go léir.

I'm so sad to hear of Jim's passing. We grew up together on Shanglas Road. His Mum, Breda, and my Mum, Bernadette, were one of the first residents on the road and were good friends until Breda's untimely passing. They were all in the ICA and held frequent Tupperware parties in the 60s, with 'Ceptha Ryan, Ann O'Connor and Jenny Blake, Nuala Dack and occasionally Mrs Wickham. Neither of us were particularly good at soccer so we ended up playing music when we were 16-17, formed a folk group called 'Lantern', with Noel Doyle, guitar and whistle, and Catherine Kearns, vocalist. Jim played guitar and I played mandolin and recorder and we all sang harmonies, or thought we did. We won a talent competition in Whitehall, and the prize was £20 and to play support to a group called Planxty in O'Connell's School Hall. One of those groups went on to much better things. We played 'California Dreamin' by Mamas and Papas, 'You're so Vain' by Carly Simon. I remember looking at the audience, who were looking at us like we were from outer space, and I looked back at Jim, who had the eyes closed, shaking the head, strumming away, living the moment, oblivious of the hostility from the crowd. We finished with 'Johnny's Wedding' by Horslips and I think that was the only reason we got out alive. That was our only and last gig. Sincerest condolences to all the family. David
