So sad to hear of the passing of a great friend & great man , Jimmy Hegarty. We taught together in the Sem & he was so helpful & generous especially to new teachers ..I played my first game of golf with him - gave me a shot at every hole & still beat me . Was a great footballer for Glenflesk & East Kerry. We travelled many a road together of which I have the happiest of memories.To his wife Mary & family , my deepest sympathy. Dear Mary, Máire, Siún, David, Patrick, Séamus, sincere sympathies to you on the sad passing of your wonderful Jimmy, a husband and a father in a million. Sincere sympathies too to Jimmy’s grandchildren of whom he was so fond of, to his daughters-in-law, son-in-law, his brothers, nieces and nephews and the extended Hegarty and Nolan families. He made time for you all. Also thinking of Jimmy’s teaching colleagues, his friends from all the organisations he gave his talents to, all the young people he mentored and his neighbours. Jimmy made time for all of you too. Jimmy indeed was a remarkable man and we all feel honoured to have known him. His legacy will live on in his devoted family and in all the lives he touched. The Requiem Mass for Jimmy was a fitting tribute to a man who had a deep devotion to the Eucharist at Mass and also lived out that Eucharist in his everyday life. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.

Jimmy or “Hego” as he was affectionately known, was my teacher of Latin, football and overall life values which I treasure to this day. Way ahead of his time as a football coach. When I think of those training sessions down in the Demesne, I knew then that his tactics were revolutionary and way ahead of his time. A genuinely lovely man who will forever be part of my Sem memories from the 1970’s. Another precious link with a bygone period now severed. May his gentle, honourable and kind soul rest in peace
