We got to know Joan as a happy and companionable friend at our Aqua Aerobics group in the swimming pool at the Limerick Strand Hotel. Joan threw herself into all the activities and entertained us with her lively chat at the subsequent coffee sessions. Joan was delightful company.

You have the consolation that, as the death notice said, Joan was a “colonel.” She really was. As a colonel in the British Royal Army Nursing Corps, Joan brought her nursing skills worldwide. She led with distinction in military hospitals in Germany, Ghana, Malaysia and elsewhere. Joan received a Queen’s Award for her achievements.

Joan was reticent about all this, but we managed to drag it out of her in our frequent visits to her in the very caring Milford Nursing Home.

Our Mum, Olive Gentleman, had the great fortune to do her midwifery training with your Aunty Joan many years ago in the Rotunda, from which time they enjoyed a wonderful friendship for nearly 70 years, until our Mum passed away last year. Although not actually related, we always called her “Aunty Joan” too. She was an inspirational lady, and a dear friend to our family.
