Aunty Joan always made us feel so welcome on our rare visits to Ireland. As a child of a migrant family in Australia, I felt a bit shy meeting the 'Wexford Whelans'. Joan was always so delighted to have us visit, made us feel immediately like part of the family and felt very much the proud matriarch. She'd always ring around all the cousins and try to get everyone to pop in to say hello. We'd get news of all the extended family, and she'd always talk with such pride of her grandchildren. And of course, on the birth of my first and only daughter, a little knitted jumper arrived in the mail swiftly! She was a darling Aunty. We're all going to miss those visits. My condolences to everyone in Wexford. Love from Fiona.

How do you start to write a tale of family? We endured so much at a young age but despite that had fun & great times together. Dear old aunt Liz kept the home together & Joan was her constant companion. Distillery road was at the centre of life with Aunt Katie & her Melodian so many happy memories that remain with me.

My lovely sister Joan knitted me the jerseys that kept the heat & life in me when I was fishing on the Lustre. I have many happy memories of our visit some years ago. It was a great reunion with you & your family that you were immensely proud of. I fondly remember the wonderful feed of tripe you cooked for you & I. So many other great memories but too many to mention.

So may God welcome you to your reward & give peace & love to your family.

Sending sincere condolences to Joan's family and friends. Very sad to here about the death of such a loved person. The few times I met Joan I was very touched by her kindness and openess. She was very down to earth and had a lovely sense of humour. May she rest in peace. I lit a candle at Mass today and prayed for her and the family.
