Very sorry to hear of Joan’s passing, condolences to all her friends and family. She gave so much to the horses and ponies and to the very many children and adults that learned to ride and care for horses in killottern. Some of my most treasures childhood memories are from my years spent in Joan’s riding school. May she rest in peace.
My deepest sympathy to all of Joan,s family on her sad passing. I have such great memories of times spent in her riding school in the 80s, the competitions, entertainment and great fun, the lovely horses suited to particular needs especially those of us not the most skilled. She was legend in the horse world. What she achieved was phenomenal. I remember teaching at her wonderful place and Snowball was the horse everyone wanted to ride!

I grew up in Kilotteran with the ponies. Such wonderful memories of Joan and the great times we all had there. A lovely photo of Joan and Ringo. She always loved the quirky ones best. It was a small place in the early 70s and I couldn’t believe the changes in later years. I moved away and had my own horses later all thanks to Joan.

As a blow in to Bord na gCapall in the 70’s I was always greeted with enthusiasm by Joan. She loved her work with her students and horses and achieved that rare balance of effort and delight during every equine hour. I had the deepest respect for her.

A beautiful service and fitting tribute to a wonderful woman who was ahead of her time and someone who taught those of us who spent our childhood in Kilotteran, not only how to ride horses, but how to be strong and brave young women. You meant so very much to so many of us, Joan. Thank you. x

Our deepest sympathy to Bride and Neil, all nephews and nieces and in-laws with Joan’s passing. Some of us had our first riding experiences with Joan, Helen, Bride and later with Gene at Killoteran. They were wonderful times; even before the indoor and barn were built- a while ago for sure…What a great equestrian legacy from Joan to us all. May she rest in peace.
So sorry to hear of Joan's passing. She was a profoundly good influence in my life, allowing me to teach in her school and introducing me to so many wonderful people through our profession. Sbe was an extremely knowledgeable and experienced person in a notoriously difficult and dangerous sport and I will always be grateful for her willing assistance any time I asked her and will always remember the conversations we had. I will miss her presence dreadfully as I am sure all her family and friends will too. May she rest in peace.

Where in this wide world
Can man find nobility without pride,
Friendship without envy or beauty without vanity?.
Here, where grace is laced with muscle & strength with gentleness
confined.
He serves without servility.
He has fought without enmity.
There is nothing so powerful,
Nothing less violent.
There is nothing so quick
Nothing more patient.
Ireland’s past has been borne on his back.
All our history is his industry.
We are his heirs, he our inheritance.
Deepest sympathy to Bride & all your extended family on Joan’s leaving Mother Earth. Her lovely photo reminds me of her dearly departed great friend Nancy Maher, another great lover of horses & all creatures great & small. They were such great friends & they’ll have great chats in heaven.
Rest in Peace Joan & May your Memory be a Blessing.
