My condolences to Joan's family on the sad loss of Joan. I will never forget Joan as my Midwifery tutor and later as my colleague, a passionate, caring and pioneering Nurse and Midwife. May you rest in peace.
My sincere sympathy to Joan’s family and many friends. I worked with Joan in ED , and she was respected and admired by all who knew her. She was hard working and set very high standards and was a huge advocate for patient care.
I remember how kind she was to me when my parents died.
Rest in peace Joan
I am so sorry to learn of the passing of Ms Fitzgerald, she was such an inspiration to me during the years I worked in ICU St James. Her advocacy for patients and nurses rings in my head still. She knew the value of looking after nurses as then they are empowered to continue to advocate for quality care to patients. I was so lucky to have had her as a manager. May she rest in peace
On behalf of INMO I wish to extend deepest condolences to Joan’s family . All of the tributes paid to her here describe the fabulous manager and nursing leader which she truly was . A wonderful focused witty manager and willing to give of her time to help all. She served for many years as a trustee of the INO and then INMO for which we are very grateful. It was always a pleasure to engage with her in St James.

Joan was my midwifery tutor in St James Hospital 82 to 83..fond memories of her.
May she rest in peace.
Joan was a genuinely kind, considerate, witty, gentle human being. She gave her entire professional life to improving patient care through education, supporting & encouraging innovation & promoting best practice in nursing/midwifery. Those of us who were privileged to know her professionally & personally benefited hugely from her wisdom, knowledge & skills as a mentor & leader. Although Joan was a 'mighty force' to be reckoned with she was shy & humble & never sought the limelight for herself. She was a champion negotiator & were it not for her pioneering vision for the nursing/midwifery profession we would not have the numbers of ANP/AMP's we have in Ireland today. Joan would often joke about how we both started developing the role of emergency nurse practitioner for ED without the help of the internet & with only an A4 page and a pencil. As the scope of practice developed Joan turned an aspiration into a reality through her determination, tenacity & her 'CAN DO' spirit. As a result of her commitment to advancing the roles of nurses & midwives, many patients have benefited with improved access to specialist delivered healthcare in areas where none previously existed. Joan's legacy will live on through those she has influenced both directly and indirectly. Thank you Joan, most sincerely for everything you did for me and countless others. Your family must be immensely proud of all of your achievements. Rest easy now - you are with those you loved so dearly. Val (E.T,SJH)

My sincerest condolences to Joan's Family, former colleagues and friends.

I undertook the Post Grad ED Nursing Programme in St James's Emergency Department in 1995 and Joan was the Nurse Manager for the ED directorate.

Joan was an exceptional Nurse Manager, an authentic leader who was patient focused and staff focused.

Her energy was phenomenal.

An outstanding Public Servant within our Irish Health System, making changes, progressing services, promoting autonomy and all of the above for patients attending services.

May Her Soul Rest in Peace.
Dear The Fitzgerald Clan and friends,
My deepest condolences on the sad departure of your wonderful sister, aunt, grand aunt and friend. What a beautiful pic of her also : )
I came across Ms Fitz as a frightened lil student nurse in 1991 and to be fair she scared the living daylights out of me and many of us student nurses also to boot ha! We became closely acquainted by default during my second year training as both my parents passed away suddenly in SJH some thirty years ago and Ms Fitz somehow calmly, sweetly, quietly and comfortingly took me under one of her wings. Her wings were so big, vast and she spread them widely throughout her nursing career.
Luckily, I got to work under her guidance for the next ten years and we had many moments of laughter plus many of tough love and questioning! I will never forget her inherent kindness, support and 'real words of honesty'. Despite being a tough task master and she was no doubt, her heart was bursting, so big and she taught us how to put our patient's first and foremost against all the adversities and challenges we faced ongoing. 100% support always and trust for what she / we believed in all the way.
I will continue to work always using these same guiding working principles and values, after all I learnt from the best. I am thinking of you all during this sad time and my thoughts and prayers are with you all.
May Ms Fitz gently rest in peace with all our loved ones past.
Always remembered and never forgotten X

So sad to hear of Joan's passing. My sincere sympathies to her family at this very sad time. I remember Joan's sense of humour and lightheartedness, and she was always ready to guide and advise regardless of how busy she was. I left St James's many years ago but have often thought about Joan. She left a lasting impression on so many people. May Joan Rest in Peace.
In St. James's Hospital Joanna was always Joan to us. She used to remind us that she was called Jo or Joanna at home and outside her nursing life. She had a huge influence on all those who worked with her. She had an enormous heart and an extraordinary generosity of spirit. She was also a woman of total integrity and honesty and expected that of those who worked with her. Joan was a nurse through and through - she embodied all the values of her caring profession and was passionately dedicated to delivering the best possible care for her patients and clients. She took a great interest in helping others to advance within their professional lives and had a very deep influence on the development of the profession - the first ever Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) in Ireland was introduced by Joan into the ED while she was Nurse Manager there. On a personal and professional level, I loved her dearly and have missed her since her illness took her away from us. May she rest now in a well earned peace. She will never be forgotten. I send my warmest condolences to all her family at this difficult time. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.

Sincere condolences to Joan's family at this very difficult time. Joan was simply the best in everything she did.

A true leader, mentor, colleague, friend and a very generous individual. I am honoured to have worked with her in SJH and to have known her like I did. She taught me well. A lady who always had time for guidance and personal chat. Her visibility across the campus was there each and every day. She had remarkable strength and advocacy for all.

Joan, your name is often mentioned around and your memory will always live on. There is no other Joan Fitzgerald like the Joan Fitzgerald that SJH knew.

May you RIP.

May she find comfort now.
My deepest sympathies to Joan’s family and friends. She really was a wonderful member of the Nursing Profession. She was my Midwifery Tutor in St James Hospital 1981 to 1982. So dedicated to her role in teaching us she never missed a trick. She loved to join us outside of work as well for various celebrations. May she RIP. Knowing that she was responsible for so many midwives around Ireland
I am very sorry to hear of Joanna’s death.
Joanna had a long career as a nurse and midwife. She brought great passion and clinical excellence to every role that she had. While practising as a midwife she was involved in advancing the care of her patients, as a midwife tutor she was involved in research and was highly regarded in the profession by colleagues and students. She was an outstanding tutor, mentor and friend.
I worked with Joanna in the emergency department of St. James's Hospital. She pioneered the role of the advanced nurse practitioner and oversaw the development of the first ANP role in Ireland. She was focused on the care and welfare of patients and the development of the profession.
Joanna was generous with her time and advice to colleagues, she helped many develop their careers.
She was a pioneer throughout her career, she will be missed by a large circle of friends.
Condolences to her friends and family at this difficult time
