Poem for Mum / Joanna

'Shadowless Meadows'

Your legacy is every life you touched
and with that
you carry your deserved good fortune
through heaven’s gate and beyond.

Beyond the ocean’s breath-and-spray,
through shadowless-meadows of cornflower blue
and primrose yellow hue;
with lavenders’ perfume - lingering on a summer breeze -
lingering - on a summer breeze -

I thank you, in the eternity of this moment.

I stand,
looking towards the slender trees,
the passing clouds
of an azure sky.

Born through your grace,
you gave me life - a life of adventure and curiosity.

And the causes you made,
helped lay the foundation
for a Renaissance of Value Creation.

How many full moons ‘till we meet again ?

I will find you,
for whatever you gave away
shines forever in your life.

And now, I bid farewell -

Cheerio mum . . . . . . cheerio

We, Natalie Gruer and Jean Meunier, send from our little village of Solesmes, in the west of France, our deepest thoughts to Joanna Fry's family, Susie, Robbie and Sara, Solomon, Dominic and Jacob, Nicky, Jean, Caroline and Liane. We keep our friend Joanna's souvenir deeply present in our hearts.

I, Natalie first met Joanna in January 1968 when I stayed in her family as an au pair girl. I was twenty years old. A special link, a lovely relationship between us began at that time and lasted till now. Joanna was a wonderful person, so generous, so open minded, so tolerant, always ready to share, always ready to listen... She has been a precious friend, a beautiful present in my life !

Later we met Joanna and George with my husband Jean and our daughter Adrienne a few times in Foxrock since 1980, and until today we kept in touch with Joanna. The last time I travelled from Paris to Dublin has been two years ago. Then, I had the immense pleasure to spend precious moments near Joanna, and to meet again Susie, Robbie and Sara.

Our last phone call, thanks to Robbie, a few weeks ago has been very moving : Jean played the piano and I sang for Joanna, we could imagine her listening and smiling, with a young and joyful light in her blue eyes...
Thank you dear Joanna for the sound of your voice, thank you for your smile, your inner « elegance », your genuine beauty.

From Natalie, Jean, Adrienne and little Louise

Sincere sympathy to all the Fry family. To Nicky, Caroline and Jean. Our thoughts are with you all at this time.
Sending much love and many thoughts to Susie, Robbie, Sara and Joanna’s grandsons from Jean Wood, Bee Wood and Victoria van Buuren (nee Hopkins) in England. Joanna’s endless kindness and indomitable spirit are abiding memories, taking me under her wing like a second mother when I was new to Dublin. We were truly blessed to get to know Joanna though the original friendship of George and my father, Russell Wood, who had met as young airmen in 1940.
Sincere condolences to Nicky, Caroline, Liane and all the family. I have fond memories of the four Phibbs girls in their Elm Park days when I was, from time to time, a near neighbour staying at Laurelmere in Marlay. In later years I met Joanna again at St Columba's when I taught there and Robbie was a pupil. She was always smiling, gentle and gracious.
May she rest in peace.
We remember our trips to Dublin with such fondness, Joanna was unfailingly kind, generous and so tremendously welcoming to us and all our various (and very varied) friends. We just remember her being so very interested in people and life.
Our thoughts are with Susie, Robbie, Sara and the boys.
Condolences to Caroline Kennedy, Nicky OReilly and Robbie Fry on the death of Joanna.
