Joe Barnes

Sincere condolences to Joe’s family and close friends.
I first met him in the late 80s through his friendship with the late Cillian Briscu. Joe was studying at KI.
I was a young graphics designer and we two would get into technical conversations about 35mm slr camera’s depth of field.
A sharp intellect, he was generous with his time and insights. He encouraged me to continue with KI legal studies about a decade ago.
He grew into being the confident humane advocate for justice with his unique ‘talk to Joe bon homme style’.
I thought of him this morning and I’m saddened to learn of his passing.

Joe 'devilled' for me, that is was my apprentice barrister, when he first came to the Bar. He was a most engaging young man, with a ready wit and a sense of genuine fun about him. His career progressed well and, a fine advocate, he appeared in many cases and also had a leading role in the Disclosures Tribunal where his approach to cases was typified by his concision, the way he would come to the point and the politeness with which he addressed witnesses.
On a personal level, Joe loved children and valued friendship. During our year together, he came to my home and photographed my daughters. A really beautiful shot of one of them has pride of place at home and his other expert photographs are treasured memories. He achieved professional skill in that art.
His life was too short. I was sorry to miss the funeral due to being away in Greece. But, I'd say that Joe's best wishes went with anyone who was enjoying life in any way. Ar dhéis Dé a hanam dílis

I have not seen Joe in recent years but I was sorry indeed to hear of his death. It only seems like yesterday when when we were both part of the flocks of young and carefree barristers who routinely hit the town on Friday nights. The years rolled by but somehow Joe always seemed to remain young at heart. His ability to find the humour in situations and to laugh at himself in order to spin a good yarn made him very likable. My sincere sympathy to his family and close friends.

I really enjoyed our chats when he visited the store telling me about his ongoing projects and how much he loved living in Leitrim. He was a true gentleman and will be sadly missed.

Remembering Joe from Kilgobbin heights to Foxrock to Banyuls, it is always his "bonhomme" spirit that I will remember.

Joe will be sadly missed. He as always full of mischief and overflowing with kindness. We shared the same master Peter Charleton, which was always a touchstone in the Library. A great man and a good colleague.

I was very sorry to hear of Joe's death. My sincere condolences to Rebecca and all of his family. He was in great form back in March at the 50th anniversary of Eamonn's appointment to the role of first DPP. May he rest in peace.

Didn’t get to know Joe very well, but what I did see was a man who lived life to the full and rejoiced in his friendships! The pleasure he took in simple things such as preparing a meal for the Chess gang at Ballysmuttan stays with me and teaches me that care for others is the key! RIP Joe!👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

I heard belatedly this afternoon of Joe’s sudden passing. I can’t believe that someone who was so full of life from the day he moved into Kilgobbin has gone. We had many adventures as kids and he’d regale us with stories of sirens going on the car to get to school on time! He was so proud of Rebecca - beamed when he talked about you! Hard to believe he won’t sweep around the corner leaning back in his car with a wave. Love and condolences to you all. He was a one off - rest easy Joe

Hilarious, kind, so brilliant, an absolute character, he was so loved, and sometimes not..ha! but always respected...what more can I say? Rebecca, you were just unreal today, always incredibly proud of you, he'd mention you for no reason at all... I'll miss him.

He must have greatly enjoyed hearing from above the superb eulogy delivered at his funeral Mass today by his beloved daughter Rebecca. It reflected so much of the kindness and love of Joe, who will be very sadly missed. It was a privilege to have known him.

Joe embraced us and we hugged him back. From his beloved Mayo and Sligo to the wilds of Wicklow and his childhood home Kilgobbin, his wonderful presence will be missed. We'll remember him always for his generosity and kindness, energy and wit and especially for the Christmas flowers.

Remembering Joe today as someone so kind and good spirited ,with a glass half full positivity. We spent many times in the CCJ sharing memories of Oldhead , Recipes , and his love of his move to Dromod and its access to the Shannon. He was so proud of Rebecca and loved being a Dad . He will leave a void at many people’s tables .

Although we lost you far too soon we will carry many happy memories of you with us. Thank you for all the laughs, holidays in old head, and putting up with us piling toys and napkins on you while you snoozed after a family dinner. We love you and miss you dearly. Taroo will sadly not experience one of your famous “horsey rides” but we promise to give his some sub par ones in your honour.
