Joe Dolan

Sending love to Marie-Helene,Rachel and family. I was so fortunate to have met Joe and Marie-Helene on a flight to Perth. I only knew Joe briefly but was so taken with his generosity of spirit and kindness. What struck me most of all was the way he spoke with love for his family. I know he will always be missed and his memory treasured.

Sad to learn on my return from Italy of Joe’s passing. I send my deepest sympathy to Marie Hélène, and the Dolan family at this difficult time. Joe was a pleasant, kind, and friendly colleague. May he rest in peace. Maurice Healy.

Joe was a wonderful, kind, generous and noble man, who loved Life. He was hugely talented in so many areas of the arts. It was a privilege to know him and to work with him, and he will be greatly missed by his many friends and colleagues.

My deepest sympathies to all of Joe’s family. A lovely gentleman. When I began as a reporter in RTÉ, he was always kind, helpful, and great fun to be with on a story. May he rest peacefully.

Apart from working with Joe in RTE, where he was a legendary sound recordist, in recent months Joe had also sent me some of his writings, which were so good I urged him to continue and find a publisher. One of them, ' A Dog Barking' about the sudden death of his father in 1958 was so evocative of time and place and suffused with restrained grief, that I have no doubt Joe could have made his mark as a writer, had he not joined RTE. He was also a deeply reflective and well read man, and a few months ago sent me a scholarly reflection on Irish history and identity titled " I Am" that began with Joyce and ended with Kavanagh. His family can be proud of this multitalented man and I hope in time may collect and publish his paintings and writings.

Joe was a wonderful colleague and friend, endlessly kind, thoughtful and supportive. In recent years I have also loved getting a glimpse of his many other skills- writing, music composition, films and his paintings. My deepest sympathies to Marie-Hélène and all his beloved family.
