Joe was a kind soul I had the privilege of meeting on my way to school many years ago. Joe was a fixture of my daily routine, and we’d share conversations every day, even when I was in college. His wisdom, warmth, and the simple joy he brought to our chats will forever stay with me. Joe was more than just a stranger I passed by; he became a friend who always brightened my day. Rest in peace, Joe. You’ll be missed but never forgotten.
My earliest memories of Joe were every visit to my Nanny’s house, Joe was like a permanent fixture in the big garden out the back! He would give a wave every time I walked by! As years went by that wave became a wave of the walking stick in the front garden or walking down the road.
He quickly became one of the favourite parts of my day… when I worked behind the counter in Boylesports and he would walk in the door, walking stick swinging and he’d shout “Hellooooooo”. He’d come walking up to the counter and he’d whisper “You’re my number one”. He’d arrive with just himself, flowers from the garden wrapped in tinfoil, bars of chocolate and whatever else he decided was a nice treat. He never failed to make me smile every single day with his witty humour!! Though of course, he had about 10 number ones between Super Valu and the bookies!
A wonderful character who will be sadly missed. It feels like the end of an era with no Joe Dempsey around anymore.

So sorry to hear this as we missed seeing you around in your garden. I will always remember you showing us a plant called scrambled egg when we were out on our walks. Beautiful garden and a perfect gentleman. May you rest in peace Frank.
My thoughts are with all of Joe’s close family and friends at this difficult time. It’s hard to put into words how much he meant to others. He was extremely good to my family when my mam passed. A true gent with community spirit! Always such a genuine and good character and a bit of craic. It’s hard to believe such a good natured soul is gone. Our family will miss him dearly. Rest in peace dear Joe xxx

His great skill as a spray painter and love of gardening were very evident, not to mention his tips for horse racing.
