It is over 40 years since I last encountered the Gavin family... but that does not take from the lasting impression I had of a wonderful family, steeped in the best values. I knew Joe’s Mam and Dad and have lovely memories..... I also knew the ‘boys’ quite well and I express my sympathies to Kieran in particular. I will be forever indebted to Joe for career advice he gave me in 1973... college or a good job! ... his practical advice put me on the right course for sure....I have not met you Anne Marie, Catherine, Ciara or Aileen, but hope our paths cross so I can truly express my sympathies on the loss of a good man, a man who made a difference.

Anne Marie, Catherine, Ciara and Aileen ....My sincere condolences on the death of your Dad Joe and just to say I am thinking of your all at this very sad time and know how much loss your are feeling particularly so soon after loosing your lovely Mam. I have lovely memories of Joe and Maura on their visits to Kilcock over the years. They are both in Heaven for sure and will be looking over your all every day.

I got to know him very well when he was County Manager and a kinder and more decent person you could not meet. He was a true friend and the world today is all the poorer for his going. May he rest in peace

No matter how long you have them for, you can never be ready to say goodbye. Be thankful for the time that you had with him, and look back with joy on the memories you have. Take pride in the contribution your dad made to many of the good things that are happening around the county today - we wouldn't have Muckno Park, or the land that MTEK is built on, or all the development that has happened on the convent lands down in Carrickmacross if it weren't for his foresight and courage at a time when the Council had much fewer powers and much, much less cash. But above all of his achievements, he would have pointed to the four of you, who have followed your parents' example in being goodhearted, compassionate people who extend the hand of compassion to troubled souls and offer friendship when others walk by. For as long as you four remain with us, Monaghan will hold on to a little piece of Joe and Maura.
