We were very sad to hear about Joseph’s passing. We met him at our family reunion on Long Island and then again when we were in Castlebar. He was very kind to show us around the beautiful countryside and showed us where the family farm once stood. We will cherish his memory and pray for comfort for his family.

Sincere condolences to the Gilmartin family. Joe was a wonderful character in St Gerald’s and inspired a love of French in the class but also through the town twinning with Auray.
It’s hard really to sum up succinctly the extent that he helped shape my life.
After school I studied French in college and this shaped my career, opening up many extraordinary opportunities.
Very grateful always for his influence (and patience in the class 😀 - wasn’t the quickest with French grammar).
May he rest in peace.

Sincere sympathy to the Gilmartin family on the sad death of Joe; may he rest in peace and rise in glory. I had the privilege of being a student of his in Saint Gerald's College Castlebar for seven years in the period 1957 to 1964. He was a wonderful teacher of English, precise and interesting, who commanded respect, admiration and affection from all his students. He was also strong on discipline while at the same time giving us all a great love of literature and poetry and I honestly believe that I am indebted to him for my career as a writer. Coming up to exam time, I remember our class asking him, 'give us an appreciation of this poem sir'. 'You don't understand,' he used to say,' an appreciation has no merit unless it comes from yourself, from your heart'. Now, over sixty year later, I understand.
Thank you, Mister Gilmartin, as we used to call him, for all you taught me and many thousands of others in Saint Gerald's and rest in peace until we meet again.

Our deepest sympathy to the Gilmartin family on the death of their beloved father. Got to know Joe in the mid Seventies when I joined the staff of St Gerald’s. I always found him to be a pleasant person who loved his music. He was a great and interesting teacher who one would associate as being a university professor. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. RIP Joe.

their beloved Father, Joe. May he rest in peace.
My sincere condolence to the Gilmartin family on the death of Joe. I still recall how he introduced himself to us, first years, in Sept 1951 in St. Gerald's College. He strode over to the blackboard and wrote the word 'Novis' and asked the class what it meant. Of course there was no reply. He then wrote the word 'Novice' and now there was a response. He was Indicating that he was a newly appointed teacher and also showing the close relationship between the two languages.
Mr. Gilmartiin also taught me Honours Latin, staying back after school hours to do so.
May the light of Heaven shine on him and his Creator reward him. Go raibh leaba aige í measc na Naomh.

Deepest Condolences to Ivor and family on your loss. RIP
It is with deep sadness that offer our condolences to the family of Joe Gilmartin, a man who was truly synonymous with St. Gerald’s DLS College. As a past pupil from 1942 to 1947 and a dedicated member of the teaching staff from 1954 to 1993, Joe devoted over four decades to shaping generations of students and helping build the legacy of our school.
Joe was a true gentleman—kind, compassionate, and deeply respected by all who knew him. His sharp wit and intellect made him a captivating presence in both the classroom and the staffroom, where he enriched conversations with his wisdom and humour. He was a leader and mentor who guided both students and staff with wisdom, patience, and integrity. His steady presence and commitment to the school made him a pillar of the community.
Joe’s connection to St. Gerald’s ran deep—from his days as a student to his years as a teacher and vice principal. His legacy will live on in the memories of those he taught, mentored, and inspired.
Joe, you will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
Thank you for the years of dedication, kindness, and leadership.
May you rest in peace.

Had the privilege to be thought French by Joe but even more privileged when he taught religion- his classes were engaging and thought provoking. You never realised you were learning so much from the Master. Some years ago while seeking directions in France I got into a conversation with a French woman who was out walking. She knew Joe Gilmartin very well.
We spend some time talking about how good and decent he was as a teacher and as a human being.
We are the poorer for his loss
Rest in peace Monsieur Gilmartin.
