I have such fond memories of working with Joe in the Leader, a formative influence on the local media landscape for sure and so very helpful to young journalists starting out - he was never afraid to point us in the right direction, always while sharing a giggle along the way. Very sorry to hear of Joe's death. Condolences to his family. I have very fond memories of him from summer 1997, when I was a work experience student in the Longford Leader. He was so kind and friendly; he saw that I was shy and really did a lot to take me out of my shell. In retrospect, his kindness made a real difference to that summer and hence to my career afterwards. RIP Joe, and thank you.

Joe was an incredible mentor and friend when I was starting out at the Longford Leader. His passing is a great loss to Longford. He was such a character to be around - I even did a tai chi class or two with him! May he rest in peace.

Great memories of the 11.30am tea breaks in the Longford Leader with Christy Newman. As a young lad I learnt alot from you most notiblely the lesson of the dog chasing a car... he wouldn't know how to drive it if he caught up with it. Rest in peace Joe.

I had the pleasure of first meeting Joe in 2010 when I did some work experience with the Longford Leader. Seven years later, when I came to work for the Leader full time, he was still a regular visitor to the office and I loved to see him coming. We remained good friends in recent years and I will dearly miss his occasional lengthy phonecalls where he would talk about anything from quantum physics to Max the three-legged dog. He was mad as a hatter and I know he'd chuckle to read me saying that now. Condolences to all his family. Rest in peace, Joe.
