Joey was a true gentleman and someone we will always remember for his warm smile and the genuine happiness he brought wherever he went. He was always happy to see everyone and never too busy to give his time to support others.
My time at Benfica Women’s Football Club is full of fond memories of Joey (Betty and Freddie). Always smiling and full of chats. I am forever grateful for the unwavering support he gave to all of us.
Our thoughts are with Joey’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time. We feel privileged to have known him, and he will never be forgotten. May he rest in peace x

Heartfelt sympathy to Joey’s Family.
I met Joey when he began work as our Sports Caretaker in the Pres where we worked together for many years. Ever present in the sportshall with a welcoming smile for the girls at after school clubs and the many sports and community groups who met there. Nothing was too much trouble for Joey who went beyond duty making sure that everything was set out for each activity-Special Olympics soccer basketball volley ball badminton etc. My own Club, Dunmore BC, enjoyed special treatment!
Joey’s official remit was the sports hall area. But, if ever we had a night event in the main building, Joey would always appear to check on us. He insisted on staying around until everyone had left and then carefully checked that everything was locked and secure.
Joey had many sporting interests and was well known in football circles. He held a very warm spot in his heart for Special Olympians whom he cared for and coached in the Pres. I was privileged to see him in Croke Park in 2003 walking proudly alongside the Irish team at the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics. The encouragement he gave and the kindness he showed to the athletes sums up Joey’s character.
While he held the keys of Pres for many years, I don’t doubt that St Peter will throw those pearly gates wide open to welcome Joey to his eternal reward. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam

Sorry to hear about Joey and my condolences to the extended family. I recall when he was setting up Benfica and, against all the odds, he created a great team that has lasted. I also remember him from Waterford Glass. A gentleman who always seemed to be in a good humour. They’ll be a great soccer team in Heaven when he gets there and organises it.
