Really sad to hear of Johns passing. He was my first SHO in Harcourt Terrace and welcomed me in November 83 on a Saturday evening with a stern look but also a handshake and a smile. I was really in awe of him and if truth be told terrified. I called him Sergeant but others called him John and I was told he would tell me in time to call him John. He told me in early 84 to call him John but he still kept me and all other recruits in line and you always felt your best option was do what he told you (Sergeants didn’t ask in 1983) and unlike today Sergeants never suggested alternative views and we didn’t try to give them. Over those early days and weeks I found out how friendly, quiet and knowledgeable he was and I grew to love and admire him but always with total respect. He always remained the Boss though. He minded me during my probation period and wrote regularly on my progress to keep me in An Garda Siochana. I was told just sign what he wrote and I had so much trust and respect for that man, that I just signed everything he told me to sign without question. I was thrilled to have met him at my retirement in 2022 and I was honoured that he and you Ann came. He is such a massive loss to you Ann and the whole Meehan family and I’m really sad writing here when I realise it’s finality. May John Rest in Peace.
