My sincere condolences to Johnny's family on his passing. A character who will never be forgotten. I played full back in front of him in Synge Street and his quips and barbs were legendary.
I always remember coming back from a "friendly" match in Hollywood Co Wicklow and after a few pints headed back to Dublin. I was sitting in the back and Johner and Joe O'Hagan were in front. On the road between Blessington and Tallaght a car passed us.. John looked at Joe .. Said what do you think.. And took off in pursuit. His rallying skills were to the fore and I didn't open my eyes until we reached Tallaght.
His sense of humour will never be forgotten.. Dots Murphy

Very sorry to learn of the death of John. Great memories of playing Gaelic Football with him on Synge St GFC and soccer when he played in goal for CYMS even when the ban operated.. Great goalkeeper and sportsman. May John now rest in Peace.

John served his beloved Synge Street GFC with distinction, as player (goalkeeper) on the senior team, manager of that side, committee member and chairman of the club. John used to give my brother, Paddy Hickey (RIP) lifts to St. Anne’s, Bohernabreena, where Synger played its games for a spell, and I was told John used to practice his rally driving on those journeys.

John now brings his particular sense of style, humour and tactical astuteness to celestial playing fields, where, amongst others, he joins Synger clubmate, Anton O’Toole, and fellow rally-driver, Paddy Hopkirk, who drove his final circuit, in July, with whom John is no doubt already comparing pace notes.

I was about 18yrs when myself and Billy Toft followed John’s Rallies from service to service on many many occasions for years, I remember John in the Red Mini on the circuit of Ireland where John had a fantastic drive and result, ( think JZO 88) I just wanted to be a driver just like him. John inspired me at that early stage and afterwards I bought my first rally car,Johns Mark1 Twin Cam ( I went to Bridges yard Naas Rd with £750 for ILI320 ) I continued motor sport for over 30years I had several cars after that but Johns Twin Cam was the business and the most memorable , so thank you John for all the wonderful memories, my son Jason rallies a Mark 1 now. So look what John started. Thinking of you John safe journey.
