It’s truly a sad day, for John’s Family and his friends.
John is my Big Brother.
John was a Senior boy when I became enrolled in Presentation Brothers College as a kindergarten child.
He looked out for me while he completed the “ banking program”.
I went on to UCC and medicine, John to do well in the bank and after that in private entrepreneurship.
While my business took me to Canada, we communicated when we could.
For me, John lived the “ I did it my way” life that very few can claim to experience.
He embraced the field & stream. He enjoyed living close to Nature.
He loved his wife, Phil. He loved his children & he believed in being kind when at all possible.
Penelope and I will miss him dearly.

My sympathies on the passing of John. He was very kind to me when I first joined the Cork Salmon Anglers and I met him on the river bank just after catching my first salmon on the Lee. He was as excited for me as I was myself.

On behalf of all our members I would like to offer our sincere sympathies and condolences to Martin, Sylvia, and the extended Buckley family on the death of our dear friend John.

During our many chats down the years John often talked of the times he worked away from Cork in Newry, Bantry, Cahir, and Limerick, and he made it very clear the charms of those places were as nothing compared to Cork and what he always referred to as his "beloved River Lee". His love for Phil, Martin, and Sylvia was plain for all to see as he spoke of them regularly, and so fondly, but perhaps no more fondly than his love for the salmon and trout of the Lee.

A most dedicated Secretary of our club for over 40 years, I think there is hardly a member who does not owe John a thank you for a favour, a fishing tip, or good turn. We will miss you John, and many of us will think of you when we tackle a fishing rod.

Sincere condolences to the Buckley family on John's passing. He always welcomed myself and Martin's other friends very warmly to his house whenever we were over there despite being annoying teenagers.

Was sorry to hear the news on John’s passing. John was instrumental in introducing my father Tony to the Cork Salmon Anglers in the 1960’s when they both worked in the M&L Bank in Cork. So indirectly he brought me in too and I was delighted for the opportunity to meet him at the CSAA AGM in 2023- a kindred spirit and life long angler.
