It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of John Cattigan of Meewillian, one of the great sociable and cultural people of our time in the Currane Peninsula and Achill. We offer sincere and deepest sympathy to his wife Kathleen, Padraig, and all his family, nieces and nephews and to the extended Cattigan families and friends of John Cattigan at home and abroad at this sad time for you all.
Remembering John Cattigan or “John the Post” as a quiet and reserved man of great integrity, his love of Gaelic Football, his immense knowledge and interest of the family history and culture and his work as a rural postman went far beyond the call of duty. John Cattigan was renowned for sharing family and local history and Achill culture with likeminded people where ever he met them. My many sharing chats and exchanges with John over the years with regard to our common interests, common Relatives and shared ancestry within the Cattigan Clan will always remain a special and memorable experience.
One of my Discussions with John in Recent times and which remained unfinished given his untimely and sudden passing was the subject of the escape , rescue and shelter by Thomas “Ban” Cattigan and the Cattigan Brothers s of Belfarsad of Fr Manus Sweeney of Dukinella before he was recaptured by the British and Hanged in the Square in Newport in 1799 during the landing of Gen Humbert in Killala.
