I was very saddened and upset to hear of Johnnie's death. It was too soon. Johnnie, Peter Haugh, and myself were the same age and used to play together as young boys when he lived in Ardaghowen, along with Donald and David Rankin, my sister Joan, and Padraig Killfeather . After Peter, my best friend was Johnnie. My memory is poor but one of my clearest and most treasured recollections is being with Johnnie down on the slipway below his house (we were 9 or 10 at the time) and Johnnie with an excited face telling me about the exploits of a Royal Navy frogman called Buster Crabbe. I will carry the image of that excited boyish face with me for my life and it is one of the treasures of my life.
We lost touch after the family moved to Hazelwood and I moved to Dublin in 1973. I always think of Johnnie and the rest of us as kids running around Ardaghowen when McArthur Park comes on the radio. I didn't meet Johnnie since around 1985, but it is a measure of him that I remember him so vividly when other friends have faded.
I would like to say to Victoria, Charlotte, and Juniper that you are among the luckiest people alive to have had a father/grandfather like Johnnie, also to his sisters and brothers to have had such a sibling and to Phil to have met such a partner.
He will always have a special place in my memories, which I hope may be of some small consolation for you all. He was a remarkable person, and it was my privilege to have known him.
Knowing him bettered my life.

I knew Johnny in my teenage years and his great personality and calm strength always reminded in my memory. I had last spoken about Johnny to Mary when she was taking care of my father in Sligo Hospice, but always recalled him and Pat whenever I passed their old home in Hazelwood. Rest in Peace Johnny…🙏
