John Clune

Sincere sympathies to John's family and friends on his sad passing. I'm shocked and saddened to learn of his death, having last spoken to him at Christmas but having been unable to contact him more recently. I first met John in Taxes Post Section in February 1973, from where we transferred into Unit 77. We kept in contact through all the succeeding years - its hard to believe he's gone. A gentleman and always in good form despite some health issues over recent years, I'll miss our conversations about times past and setting the world to rights. I'll treasure my memories of John, may he rest in peace.

JC you were my Brother in Law first but you became my Best Friend.
You were smart, you were loyal, you were honest and I loved you like the Brother I never had.
We shared many things together but we trusted each other in every aspect of our Friendship.
I said it yesterday in a Private gathering that losing Ma (Betty) and now losing you beautiful Ballanruan will never be the same again and to return would be painful.
I thank all of the wonderful Friends and Family I have met in this great place but most of all I will miss my Great Friend and inspiration JC.
You were a Big Man in every way and had a Code of Conduct that everyone admired.
I miss you Mate and look forward to picking out a few Winners when we next meet.

You never cared for titles—we knew better than to call you “uncle”—but the care you gave was unmistakable. You poured your time, your strength, and more than a few dreams into coming home and keeping Ballanruan running alongside Irish Nan, Betty Clune.

You lived quietly and gave generously—no fuss, no fanfare. Just steady hands and a steady heart, looking after the land, the house, the dogs, the cats, and the cows. You kept it all going without ever asking for thanks.

It wasn’t all graft—you had your own way of sharing life’s lessons. You taught us how to drink a pint of porter properly—slowly, with respect, in three deliberate visits to the glass. And you gave us one of the worst hangovers of our lives on the plane back to England. A rite of passage, really.

And your Irish—well, it was as colourful as it was educational. The kind of vocabulary no school could teach—and all the better for it.

Pippa and Magnolia never got to meet you, but they’ll know you. One day we’ll bring them to Ireland, walk them through the village and the fields, and tell them about the man who gave so much and made us laugh while doing it.

You were kind. You were sharp. You were entirely yourself. Rest easy, John. The land remembers you—and so do we, pint in hand, hearts full.

He was a wonderful mentor, so knowledgeable and generous with his time. I still quote John today when teaching people the ropes. He had a great perspective on life and a marvellous sense of humour. So sad to hear of Johns passing i called to see him on 22nd march and we had a great chat about times past both about work place and of course coursing and hurling. He was a great work colleague and friend.many a good day and night at Killarney and galway races from work outings back in the good old days. RIP john you will be missed

I worked with JC for 40 years in different areas of Revenue. In work and at play he was as sound a man as you would ever come across. He generously shared his vast knowledge and experiences with anybody needing guidance.
