My heartfelt condolences to John's relatives, his neighbours and his party colleagues on his sad passing. I knew him for many years as a delegate from Roscommon County Council to the General Council of County Councils and later in his public life as Senator and TD. He was engaging, erudite, a committed European yet a proud exponent of politics west of the Shannon. I will have fond memories of his good humour and supportive nature. - Liam Kenny, Association of Irish Local Governrment

We were so very saddened to hear of John's sudden death. He was an invaluable servant to the people of Roscommon and Ireland on the politcal stage. He was also possessed of a profound depth of knowledge on so many subjects on the local, national, and international level.
From a personal perspective he was a good and loyal friend and will be missed greatly . When active as a public representative his articulate jousts with his political rivals will be remembered vividly and with fondness.

On a personal level I will never forget his kindness, friendship and support during our many years in Leinster House, and in the years since he left political life. We, and our colleagues shared many good days , endured many tough days but always saw the glass half full.
Goodbye John and Thank You.

Shocked and saddened to hear of Johns sudden passing last Saturday evening, I knew John since early 1980s and for me its the end of an era,John was the Thinking persons candidate, He was articulate, honest, got jobs done for people with little fuss.
John served Roscommon/east Galway for over 30 years, some great days and some bad day but that was what drove him on,but behind every good politician is a well oiled canvass team and John had from day 1 a dedicated core of well respected highly organised people.
Many sadly gone before John,no doubt they are planning once again.
When You were friends with John you had a friend for life.
John loved Frenchpark and getting away from politics to farm in cloonshanville,he spoke fondly of his sisters and nephews,he was proud of them all.
Farewell my Friend, Roscommon has lost a true Statesman.
