I am very sorry to read of Mr Cunneen's passing. I remember him with perennial affection and refulgent respect.

In the early 70s, I was working for a builder who was renovating the South Pres convent on Douglas Street. The building had dozens of doors with old horizontal 3 lever locks which I had to take to Mr Cunneen's shop on the Pope's Quay for him to cut keys.

When I entered Mr Cunneen's shop, it looked like it had been bombed in the blitz! The ceiling was sagging and hanging precariously a few feet above his head, and the back of the shop was shimmering in eerie darkness as if it concealed a ravenous monster!

Mr Cunneen would invariably be filing ferociously some piece of metal clamped in a bench vice. His hands were always caked in oil and soot, always a sure sign of a craftsman.

I took so many old locks to Mr Cunneen's dilapidated shop for him to cut new sets of keys, which he did without the slightest difficulty. His ceiling sagging precipitously lower each passing week, but no matter, he kept on filing and fixing locks and serving the people of Cork as an ineluctable testament to his searing locksmith skills, knowledge and experience.

I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr Cunneen and I pray he enjoys eternal peace and rewards in paradise.

And they gazed and gazed
But still the wonder grew
How one small head
Could carry all he knew.

Saddened to hear of John’s passing. We always went to Popes Quay when we needed a true craftsman to sort out a lock problem… I remember he spent ages working on opening a locked blanket chest and then making up a key for the lock rather than replacing it. Not many would have that level of skill now. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.

Altough I never had the pleasure of working with John, during his retirement he would often pop into the office before lunch. I always enjoyed his company as he walked with me to town on his way his beloved library.
He will be greatly missed.
