May his soul find peace
May his soul find peace
He was audacious.
A dog of many wars.
A man of many names.
Outrageous in his words and in his gifts.
A brambled heart that beat to a different rhythm.
Watchful even when it seemed that all he wanted was to be watched.
Expansive in his opinions and quick with his words.
Too quick sometimes,
As if they had escaped him rather than been uttered.
And when the word he wanted did escape him,
his gratitude for helping him find it was bruising,
A knuckle to the arm and a firm grip.
Pay attention!
His stories had the quality of folk tales.
Or fiddle playing.
Oft repeated and familiar,
but no two tellings quite the same.
In his cups he may have forgotten
Much, not least his limits,
But not, I sensed, his love
nor the love of the place that embraced him.
There are few enough places left,
For a man like him. And fewer still to fill them.
In the summer, I’ll climb the steps and remember
careful climbs in the dark.
Paying attention.
We will miss him.
My deepest sympathies to his family and many friends on their loss.
