One of Life's great characters,Always will be in my memory, as far back as Longford"s rugby tour to Cyprus in 1984 when we had to stop the tour bus so that John could get some lemons from a tree for his G&T's!! Just one of the many memories that will be cherished

So sorry to hear of John's death
Sincere condolences to the Gleeson family.
I first met John in Mayo in 1976 but it only seems like yesterday because the memories of a big jolly fun loving young lad are still so vivid.
That smiling face covered in muck from head to toe playing rugby for Ballina the day he won a senior Cup.. and Mebs you played well.
I met John again about 10 years ago in Hermitage with Captain Denis and I can say it was the same young lad , just a little older.
A couple of gin and T and we are having a party.
One could write a book on John Gleeson and it would still only be half the story.
Rest in peace John. You were heck of a nice lad
Sincere sympathy to the Gleeson family. It was a pleasure to have know John and to have played rugby and golf with him. All in Longford RFC remember the great fun and enjoyment John got from inventing the wall ball and all the tries we scored from it and the celebrations in the club.
Condolences to the Gleeson family-----John will be missed by all his rugby pals a privilege to have played with him

I was much saddened to learn of the passing of another of my Castleknock classmates. My sincere condolences to his family and to all who loved him, May he rest in peace.

(Unfortunately, although for various reasons I haven't normally attended Castleknock-related events for quite some time, I had hoped to attend the commemoration at Hermitage Golf Club, but I won't be able to do so, due to Covid-related reasons).
Very sorry to hear of John's untimely death. He was a great character, full of life and had an encyclopedic memory so it was so cruel that he was hit with such a debilitating illness with a lot of life left to live. Being in his company at events in Hermitage guaranteed a fun night. Rest in peace John.
Very sorry to hear of the passing of Jack. He was a lifelong friend to my father Declan, who will miss him dearly. I’ve always enjoyed the stories of all the mischief dad, Jack and Mannix got up to.

Although I didn’t see Jack very regularly, I always felt a connection when we did. I saw him last when he was staying with mum and dad in 2019 and, within minutes, he was slating me over my favourite movies!

Rest in peace, Jack.
My sincere sympathy to all of the Gleeson family ,I have such fond memories of playing in Hermitage with my dad and also John playing with his dad Des over 40 years ago .More recently John was always the best company on and off the course ,I know Paul and Richie will particularly, like all of us,miss his company and great sense of fun so much .
He had a phenomenal wide knowledge base and the jumbo annual quizzes in the paper were a doddle for him .
Rest in peace ,John .
Julie and David , I am so sorry to hear of the passing our your dear brother (and my cousin ) John.
A kind and gentle soul with a daft and engaging streak ( rather similar to my late bother Ronan !) May he rest in peace. Sincere apologies as I will not be able to attend his funeral as I am going to hospital tomorrow for surgery on my knee. Best wishes and kind regards .

Lovely man and always a pleasure to be in his company at Hermitage.
We are so saddened to hear of Johns passing, sincere condolences to Judy & David. We have so many great memories of John, the mixed in Hermitage, his humour and storytelling, the parties, he was such a unique character. It was a privilege to have known him. Rest easy John.
Very sorry to hear of John's death. A lovely man and quite the character. I knew him from school days in Castleknock and then reestablished contact in Hermitage G.C. We had many a lively discussion on rugby matters on which he had firmly held opinions. Always the best of company on and off the golf course. My condolences to Judy, David and the extended Gleeson family.
So sorry to hear of Johns passing. A real gentleman who always had time for a laugh. Rest in peace, John.
Sincere sympathy to the Gleeson family on John's death.

I have great memories of John during our years at Castleknock and the following years at University. In particular the countless occasions on which we played a hundred and ten card games. It was always great fun.
One of life’s unique characters, last time I met him was the last time he played Hermitage,Ritchie COLLIS and Paul Maher were there along with a few other’s including a lovely person who very kindly was looking after him for a few days. On the course it was obvious that John’s short term memory wasn’t great however when we were in the clubhouse he was in his element going from table to table where he knew the faces and they all knew him. I decided to see how his longer term memory was so as previously mentioned ,his love of the film Butch Cassidy, I put on my bad American accent and said”who are those guys “ quick as a flash he smiled and said”wow you’re good “RIP John
so sorry to hear of John's passing.

it was always a joy to meet up with John in Hermitage. always smiling, always friendly and such a caring person.
he has been missed.

John was a a very kind and honourable gentleman and will sorely missed by those of us privileged to have had him as a friend or acquaintance over the years in the Hermitage
Deeply saddened to hear of John’s passing, and recalling especially at this time the conversations I would have had with him concerning his impending illness. But all that stuff is now behind you John, and you can rest in peace. Sincerest condolences to Family and loved ones.
Our sincere sympathy to Judy, David and all the family on John's death. May he rest in peace
Very sorry to hear of John's death. May he Rest in Peace.
We are so sad to learn of John's death. We have known him for so many years and enjoyed great times and fun in Hermitage especially during all the times he and Maud partnered for the mixed foursomes. May his gentle soul now rest in peace .
John was unique in so many ways and a great member of Hermitage. He bore his illness bravely and kept going for as long as he could. Sincere sympathy to all the Gleeson family. May he rest in peace.
My sincere condolences to you Judy and David on the passing of John. He was a very dear friend. He was a particularly great friend to my late brother, Mannix. They had many, many great times dreaming up the most obscure quiz questions in the hope that neither one could answer them but of course each was well capable of answering anything that was fired at them!

They also shared a love of Butch Cassidy and recited excerpts from the script on many occasions. This shared love culminated in both Mannix and John meeting their idol, Paul Newman, in Washington D.C. in 1987 - what were the chances of that?

I piggy-backed on John’s Irish Times ticket or Sunday Tribune ticket to movie premieres. It was very important to see movies while they were still “fresh”. I fondly remember one particularly phone call from John where he said “I’ll see you outside the Savoy at 1.30 p.m. tomorrow”. My response was “John - I have to work, I don’t know if I’ll be able to goof off”. John’s reply was “It’s not every day the Bull McCabe comes to Dublin”! We enjoyed 1,000’s of movies together which were promptly followed by our own critique while part-taking of a Gin afterwards. We never thought those days would end.

May John’s gentle soul Rest in Peace.
It is with great sadness that I heard of John's untimely death. Condolences to Judy, David and all the family. I remember him fondly not only as a great friend to Mannix but in particular as my adopted brother when we were in College. His humour and story telling combined with his ability to invent his own short version of the English language was unsurpassed. Rest in Peace John.
My condolences to you Judy and David on the sad news of John's passing.
John was one of life's special characters with a warm heart, great intellect and an infectious sense of humour.

I will always remember John for his humourous sayings,
"More Gin Vicar"
"Is Vic there?"
And his alter ego "Maurice Bembridge"
Sincere condolence to all of Johns family. Loved the challenge on the golf course. A valued member of Hermitage. Sleep easy John.
