John Carroll was a dedicated trade unionist and democratic socialist much admired by all who knew him. He had a great sense of humour and the best of social company. He was a good friend and advisor to my father, Brendan, during their time together in the Labour Party. My condolences to his family. Be consoled by John's life well-lived.
It was an immense privilege to have served as an NEC member of ITGWU & SIPTU with this icon of the Trade Union movement. John F. Carroll was the most articulate Trade Union leader of his time and was prominent in the reunification of the FWUI and ITGWU to form SIPTU in 1990.
He was without doubt, a man of vision and great intellect who devoted his life to the cause of Labour.
Above all, he was a dear friend and this friendship meant more to me than any other experience I have ever encountered as a Trade Union activist of nearly 60 years.
May You Rest In Peace John F. Carroll.
