I never came away from a conversation with John, no matter how short, without learning something or without a smile! He was so knowledgeable, witty, genuine & incredibly gifted. Great company. We’ll miss him but are very, very grateful to have known him in this life. He is a tremendous loss & our hearts go out to you all!

To Mary, Luke, Eoin, and extended family, my deepest sympathy. I'm so sorry that I couldn't get home from England in time for the funeral, I really wanted to be there to pay my respects. John was a big influence on my life and a great friend to our family. I really looked up to him in my younger years and he took me under his wing when I first started out playing music. He was always great company, and he was gifted with so many talents and always so humble. No one could sing a ballad or tell a story quite like John and he had a fantastic sense of humor and lightening turn of phrase. His version of lord Franklin is still my favourite version ever. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad time. Rest in peace John, you'll be greatly missed.

It was such a pleasure knowing John and Mary during their time in Australia in the late 70’s - early 80’s. John was such an interesting person and adventurer! From lighthouse keeper to learning to fly a helicopter! And of course a talented musician, who enjoyed many a session at the Dan O’Connell, where we first met. I know my late husband Graham admired John greatly and cherished their friendship, and their time working together at Bunratty Castle - getting up to all sorts of antics in the kitchen!!
