RIP John. So sorry for your loss Liz and all the family thinking of you all.
The day may come when my body will lie upon a white sheet neatly tucked under 4 corners of a mattress in a hospital busily occupied with the living and dying. At a certain moment the doctor will determine that my brain has ceased to function and that, for all intents and purposes my life has stopped. When this happens do not call this my death bed. Let it be called the Bed of Life and let my body be taken from it to help others lead fuller lives.
Give my heart to a person whose own has caused nothing but endless days of pain. Give my sight to the man who has never seen the sun rise, a baby’s face or love in a woman’s eyes. Give my blood to the teenager who was pulled from the wreckage of his car so that he might live to see his grandchildren play.
Give my kidneys to someone who depends on a machine to exist from week to week. Take my cells and if necessary let them grow so that some day a speechless boy may shout at the crack of a bat, and a deaf girl may hear the sound of rain against her window.
When you bury me I ask that you bury my faults and weaknesses and all prejudices against my fellow man. Give my sins to the devil, give my soul to God. If, by chance, you wish to remember me, do so with a kind deed, a warm smile or a word of encouragement to someone who needs it.
If you do all I have asked, I will live forever.
Adapted from a poem by Robert Test, Remember Me – I will Live for Ever
Read by John's sister Geraldine O'Neill at John's funeral service

Deepest condolences Liz, Eve, Sean, Aidàn and Isibeil on the passing of your kind and gentle John. I have so many memories of my Uncle John, from going in a convoy of minibuses to his wedding in a Castle, to his frequent trips to Cork to visit Nan and his sisters. Of course the Munster jersey and his absolute dedication to following rugby (which could only possibly be rivaled by my Dad’s affection for Man United). In recent years, his overnight stays in our house when he was working in Limerick, bringing fresh brown bread to his colleagues from the shop. Most of all, his love for you all. I wish I could say that losing your Dad gets easier with time but I haven’t found that. You learn to live with this special space in your heart which only he could fill. I wish you all strength in the coming days and weeks. All our love from Holland
