John FLANAGAN

I had the honour to know Johnny Flanagan when I worked with IDA in the Midlands Region. Johnny worked hard with his head and heart to bring investment and jobs to Tullamore and achieved so much. I was saddened to hear of his passing. Deepest sympathy to all his family. May he rest in peace.

When our father retired from the Garda he worked as a bookkeeper for a young Johnny until he became terminally ill and retired . From that day until Dad died Johnny came to our house every Friday and handed his weekly pay to him. That was the measure of the gentleman Johnny was.

With his visionary and well crafted developments at Hayes Cross, the Court Hotel, Roselawn, the Axis Business Park and so many other schemes around the town, Johnny made an extraordinary and singular impact on the face and life of Tullamore. No one who met him will forget his charm, wit, wisdom and generosity.

He was a great man for the Town, Offaly and the surrounding areas. It would be hard to imagine Tullamore today, if there never had been Johnny Flanagan. A man of huge impact and modesty, a unique and unusual mix rarely found!
I remember as a younger man, while I was trying to hitch a lift out of town seeing him carrying a bucket of water across the road to the then newly being built Court Hotel, obviously not afraid to roll up his own sleeves and get his hands dirty, says so much about him.
May he rest with Christ in his eternal reward, Amen.
