So sad to learn of Jack's passing. He had a great fighting spirit and was completely devoted to Irene, especially during her later years. He will be sadly missed. Sincere condolences to Eileen and Joe, Emma and Will, Emma's partner, Micheál and the couple's children, Robyn, Seán and Aoife.

He was full of fun and quick wit, a warm and friendly man. All the dancing,singing,yarns,birthdays celebrated,trips away,Jack was always in the thick of it with his beautiful Irene. They are memories I will treasure always.

Of course, Jack was smarter and funnier than anyone in Breezy Point.

I particularly remember a Fourth of July in the days of huge beach bonfires, reckless fireworks and rampant chaos, when two little girls about eleven noticed Jack smoking, so one of them asked him for a match to light the punk she held up in her right hand. Jack, who quietly delighted in the absurd and silly, pretended that he thought the girl asked him for a cigarette. As he searched for his pack of cigarettes, the girl’s eyes grew wider and wider as she realized that she was on the edge of a whacky world where kids and adults smoke as equals. When she shyly made it clear that she only wanted her punk lit, Jack gently apologized -but never revealed the joke. Both girls, their punks lit, went off with a giddy excitement, that I suspect they can still recall.

Also, my family is still grateful for all the laughter-filled bus rides my mother enjoyed with Jack on the commuter bus from Breezy to Manhattan.

So condolences, for sure; but also congratulations to everyone who brushed up against Jack’s big
Irish-American spirit.
