I only heard the news today. Deepest sympathy to Bernadette and the Gormley family and to their wider family circle on the death of John. Since leaving the UK 23 years ago I haven't seen him but honestly, I thought of him many times. I played football against him on many many occasions over 13 years, full back on full forward. The battles were hard but we always shook hands and had a pint afterwards. Always the gentleman. A stalwart of the GAA.

I got to know John in his capacity as President of Britain's GAA Council. He was a highly regarded and popular administrator. In more recent years, I witnessed at first hand his outstanding leadership as Chairman of the highly successful All Britain Competitions with over 3000 youths participating. He was inspirational and he enjoyed the loyalty, friendship and support of all. A thorough gentleman with a great sense of fun, he will be fondly remembered.
John was also a great family man and he continued to celebrate the rich traditions of Cloone and Leitrim among his fellow emigrants.
