It was just recently that I learned of dear Johnny's passing. I met Johnny and his lovely wife late wife Mary, when they moved into the house next door in Blackrock, Co Dublin in 1964. We then became firm friends, keeping in touch over the years and I regularly attended Mary's anniversary Mass. Johnny and my late husband had a great friendship.
Every time I met Johnny, he was a joy to behold.
I would like to offer my condolences to Sarah-Jane and John Patrick and the family .

As you know, your dad, Johnny was a life-long friend of my late husband, Gene. They are probably together now discussing all things maritime or possibly their Montford College days!

Sincere sympathy to Sara-Jane and John and extended family on your dad's passing. John was a kind, softly spoken gentleman with a deep faith. It was a privilege to have known him as a colleague in CIT. We pray that as John returns to the Father's House in Heaven that he will get a tender welcome and be reunited with his beloved wife Mary who he missed so much.
May his gentle soul Rest in Peace. 🙏

Our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the Archer family and extended family on the death of John. May he rest in peace.
John epitomised the term "gentle man". There was never one so gentle or sincere.
I met John once or twice a year and was always impressed by his interest in other people. John's loneliness following Mary's passing was something he spoke of frequently.
I can only hope that John is now reunited with the woman he loved so much.
May John rest forever in the arms of Our Lord, Amen.

Such a gentleman as well as a brilliant teacher. I offer my sincere condolences. "FWE".
Will always remember him as an expert in his field.

Dearest Sara and John,
Your father made many visits to Southend on Sea and he made his mark when he attended Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes, Leigh on Sea during his visits - parishioners fell in love with him simply because he was the most humble, sensitive and serene gentleman, who could hold court with any group, over a cup of tea in the parish hall. His faith was his life and he lived it to the full.To be in his presence was delightful and it was an honour to know him.
Every night when you look up at the sky, a star will shine brightly because he is home now with your mum and they are young once again.
May he rest in peace embraced in the arms of God, who has finally taken him to his heavenly home.
Margaret, Paddy, Therese, Patrick, Andy, Evie and Orla. Xx

To John's family, sincere condolences on a remarkable man. I was one of John's first students in Dun Laoghaire in 1972. It is no exaggeration to say that he revolutionised teaching methods with a combination of knowledge, temperament, mental discipline, personal interest in the student and sheer teaching ability. As so many mariners on these pages state, his influence was more than academic ... humour, gentle speech and self deprecation were his hallmark. I always enjoyed meeting him in subsequent years. A life well lived and a good man has passed.
I was saddened to hear of John's passing - he was a gentleman to the core, and endeared himself to everyone he came in contact with. A regular attender at our retirement meetings and outings - he will be sadly missed. My sincere sympathy to Sarah Jane and Patrick and the extended Archer family on his passing - may his gentle soul rest in peace.

Thank You for keeping us informed Holly. Your grandpa was like a brother to us (as our parents were his & Francis’ guardians) & we had some awesome times together.
Rest in Peace Brother Johnny.
The childhood weekends with you and Poochie at 3rd Pasta Lane with the 3 cushions tied to you are some of my most vivid memories, alongwith all the laughs that ensued.
How I wish we had been able to meet one last time.

Dear Molly, I was very sorry to hear of Johnny's passing away.
My parents
(Major Emmanual⅝ & Regine Sampson were Johnny's official guardians since he came to Bombay to join the Dufferin and he was like a brother to us.
He spent every
'Outing' weekend at out home.
My sister Vivienne & I used to come home for the long holidays from boarding school and we used to roller skate in the passage. Johnny tried but couldn't get the hang of it & mostly landed on his butt inspite of tying a cushion to him. He & my Mum also enjoyed playing Ludo often. He was happy for the outing and the good food. I last met him when he visited us after a
07Dufferin annual gettogether and waited for the
next time - which never came. However, he always sent us X'mas greetings.
Then my eldest sister Jeannette
aka "Buddy" was trying to contact him.
I am sorry that he is no more, but pray that his soul rests in peace.
With love to the family... Maria Baptista.

My deepest sympathies to all John's family. He was such a kind and gentle man and a fount of knowledge to his students, for whom he would illustrate complex navigational theories with good humoured anecdotes. No matter how much we must have tested his patience, John never failed to go beyond and provide us with extra tuition and support in his own time. May he rest in peace.

Sincere sympathies on the passing of your dear father, John.May John now rest in peace with Mary
A wise and patient teacher to so many of Ireland’s mariners, John Archer embodied the very best of us. Wise, patient, kind, always so courteous & supportive, he led by example in his own gentle yet compelling way. Challenging his charges to go that bit further to achieve their full potential, he had a special ability to give students confidence that they could, and that they could go even further. As so many others have highlighted, John also made a big impression on me early in my career. The many professional and indeed life lessons that John taught me back then, stayed with me and have served me well.
To John’s family and friends - my sincere condolences.
Fair winds & weather John. We will all miss you. Rest in Peace.
Cormac Gebruers (former Head of College, National Maritime College of Ireland)

Sending our sincere and heartfelt condolences. My family will never forget how sweet and genuinely kind John was. He will be remembered and adored as a truly good man. It brings tears to my eyes knowing that he will finally be reunited with the love of his life. John and Mary visited us in Australia, walked with us kids in the park and gave us Celtic notebooks. They were a such a beautiful, kind hearted couple to us which truly went a long way. May the Lord cover your family with his protection and grant you peace that surpasses all understanding. All our love x

Dearest Uncle Johnny,
The Sacred Heart of Jesus was all important throughout your life, may Jesus and all The Heavenly Hosts welcome you to your place in Heaven: to be with our family gone before and be united again with your beloved wife, our dearest Aunty Mary.
I will always cherish your sweet life stories, and your added notes on every Christmas card, written in your very tidy handwritting...accept for once on a particular card when you added 'I am now clasdified as disabled'...deliberately wrote the word in capitals and slanted it to fall on the page. You made light of it all, was always a joy to listen and talk with you.
You shared the joy of your family with ours and all the others in all parts of the world. In London you came to stay with Aunty Mary, Sara Jane and 'little' John( just 5 years old then.)
My beautiful cousins and your families,
my heartfelt sorrow is with you all at the loss of your gentle and lovely Dad.
God comfort you and be with you all.

Deepest sympathies to the Archer family. I was sad to hear of his passing, he was a true gentleman. He was so patient and encouraged the first few females in the nautical department in the early nineties, in a very male dominated industry. He had a way of making difficult topics understandable, his notes and drawings were works of art. I still have some of my old notes and have used many of the things he taught me over the years both as a sailor and lecturer. He will be missed.
Sincere condolences on John’s passing. And thank you John for being a mentor in my life. Dedicated and accomplished teacher. Your met notes found their way all over the world. Steve Palmer. Cork Pilots.

Our deepest sympathy to the family of John Archer. He was a perfect gentleman - gentle, smiling and soft spoken, and wore his achievements lightly. We knew John not only during my years in CIT and my husband's association with the Nautical Department, but he was a batch mate of my cousin James on the Dufferin where they did their naval cadetship together. We had happy times reminiscing about old friends and more recent experiences. He will be sadly missed.

Worked closely with John years ago in CIT. He conversed regularly about his daughter's swimming achievments and John going to CBC and onward to University Of Warwick. He put a lot of effort into his lecturing work and it showed in his students' results. Ar aghaidh leat. ú will be sadly missed. Aidan O' Sullivan, Marine Electonics, Dept. Of Electrical, CIT.
