John (Jack) Higgins

I was very sorry and saddened to hear that my old school pal and friend John Higgins had passed. We sat next to each other in St. Catherine’s school Meath St.for many years. I recall how envious the class were of John when he was permitted to leave school when he had just turned 13 years of age to attend Bolton St. College to begin serving his Apprenticeship to the craft of Bricklaying and also receiving a wage.He excelled while serving his time and went on to represent his Country at the international apprentice competition coming first and receiving the gold medal. John was not just a very good Bricklayer he was,”beyond equal “the ultimate master craftsman.
John and Margaret emigrated to Canada and we lost touch with each other. In1970 after his sojourn in Canada and unbeknown to each other
but to our mutual delight we ended up buying similar houses a few yards from each other in Old Bawn. Margaret and John were great neighbours and friends over the last 54 years. John was also a very accomplished soccer player and from a socialising point of view there was little he enjoyed more than a good sing along.
We would like to express our sincerest condolences and deepest sympathies to Marginal,Owen,Paul and Roseanne and may John’s eternal soul rest in peace.

So sad to hear the news of Jacks passing. He was an absolute gentleman who always had time for a chat, a good laugh and a story. I have heard so many stories over the years and met so many people who speak so highly of Jack when passing through the shop or when they pop in for a chat with my dad about the football days & they always mention Jack building the wall around the ground in Baldonnell for St Francis - he had a golden trowel they would say.. Jack was a great character, I remember him since I was very young, he would always be having a laugh with us as kids. As I got older I used to love listening to his stories in Ahernes, I would be in stitches laughing. He was a great friend of my father's and someone who I looked up to. Deepest sympathies to all the Higgins family at this difficult time.
