A short piece written a couple of years back

Jack and Mary Kelleher were social members of Cork Harlequins for many years. Jack and Ken Dale were lifelong friends and through that friendship the Kellehers developed a strong link with the club. They practically lived in the place.

They had many fond memories and in particular heading into their pub in Merchants Quay (the unofficial Clubhouse) with the Harlequins crew. This was before there was a clubhouse built !

It was all about the social for the Kellehers. A mention of hockey every now and then and maybe going to the odd match, but for them the most important thing was meeting their many friends they met through Cork Harlequins. Billy Doran, Johnnie Rolf, Ken Dale, Trevor Dale, Jerry Lombard and many more.

Their kids, Finbarr, John, Bridget and Sarah arrived in the late 1960s/70 which didn't put a halt to their gallop. They brought their young family to the many social events organised at the club. Their youngest, Sarah remembers going to many of these events, walking through the legs of people, the place was packed. Santa came every year in his carriage up the drive which according to Mary scared Sarah a little. They also remember the Dinner Dances which were very popular with the members and were held in Cork city in places like Jury's Hotel and the Grand Parade Hotel. Many, many happy memories....

It was a shock to hear the sad news of John’s unexpected passing, I note the numerous comments on how nice a person John was, that does not come as a surprise to me since his Parents Finbarr & Anne were a lovely couple and they had an influence on me growing up, it’s very sad that if we visit Cork now I have lost the opportunity of seeing John & remembering the special days we spent growing up as first cousins, condolences to Mary & extended family, RIP John Paul & Mairead Murphy
