John (Johnny) Egan

Generations of CBS Thurles students knew 'Johnny' not only as a hardworking and conscientious caretaker but also as a friendly and sympathetic adult presence in an era when the student/teacher relationship was far more formal than it is today. And for those of us who tended to arrive at school early, a brief chat with him as he went about his morning routine made for a pleasant start to what could be, at times, a challenging school day. However, it was not until I joined the teaching staff some years later that I came to appreciate the depth of John's commitment to CBS Thurles and the pride he took in its many achievements.
May he rest in peace.

I was saddened to hear of Johnny’s passing. I have very fond memories of him from Thurles CBS when I worked summer jobs and Johnny bringing the CBS lawnmowers to our garage for servicing. A gentle soul. May he rest in peace.

I was only recently thinking of Johnny, remembering how good he was to us all as kids, especially at Dúrlas Óg training and matches. He was a great man to keep the peace while 30 young lads chased each other around with hurlers!! Not an easy job!
