An absolute gentleman. Exceptionally likeable character, in parallel to being highly effective at his job. John became the lead champion for environmental change within OPW and was a major positive driving force across this large organisation. It was my pleasure to have worked and learned from him.
My heartfelt condolences to John's family. I really enjoyed working with Johnny in OPW as he brought great energy, focus and integrity to all the projects we were involved in. His innate intelligence and great humour always kept things moving forward. A wonderful colleague and a wonderful person.

Dear Carole, Ali and Ava,
Heartfelt condolences on the too early death of your beloved husband and Dad. Johnny was an immensely thoughtful and considerate man, a charismatic leader and a man of great courage. He was hugely inspiring both to work with and to know. He has left a remarkable legacy behind none more so than the beautiful family he was part of. His love for you was immense. A stunningly beautiful ceremony on Wednesday celebrating his life. You did your father proud Ali with your beautiful words.
Condolences too to Joan, Ray, John's mother and aunt and all the rest of the family.
You will miss him forever. His love will remain a source of strength in your hearts every day. He does and will live on.

Dear Carole and family,
With great sadness, I learned about the passing of John. During the international exchanges in both TWN and INPP, he truly was the life our our party. John posessed a natural charm to make even the most boring meetings 'fun', while keeping an eye on the targets we had to reach. Grateful that we were still able to catch up last fall in Dublin!
Wishing you lots of strength in this difficult time.
Warm regards,
Marilette van As, Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, and former Dutch Government Buildings Agency

My sincere condolences to the McMahon family. Every encounter with the Commissioner (including at all the launches he attended after his retirement) was a pleasure. He had a sincere interest in the people he met, was generous and had a great sense of humour. His legacy lives on in the people he worked with and led as well as in the heritage, conservation and building projects he oversaw.
My deepest condolences to Johnny's wife, children and wider family on his untimely passing.

To all the McMahon family- I started in OPW in 1979- in the same office as Johnny- we had such great craic over the years- I was so thrilled for him when he became Commissioner- we would have laughed at that notion in the early days. As mentioned in the funeral service this morning ( which was beautiful and a wonderful tribute to Johnny) despite the craic he had a really strong work ethic and got things done effectively and with good humour. His legacy lives on. Deepest condolences at this difficult time.
To Johnny's cherished family, sending you my sincere condolences. As so many have already said, his lasting legacy is evident in buildings and parkland across the capital and beyond. He was a force of nature and a pleasure to work for. May he rest in peace.
Sincerest condolences to the McMahon family on the passing of John (RIP).

We are really sorry that we were unable to attend Johnny's funeral as we are in Mexico. We watched it online and it was truly lovely. A great tribute to a wonderful man.
We will really miss him!

He leaves a legacy of exceptional public service where his enthusiasm, drive and ambition for all aspects of heritage was matched by his engagement with, interest in and encouragement of all involved in its protection and presentation from director to craft apprentice. I will be forever grateful for a decade of sharing both his work and his good company.
