I am very sorry to hear of John's death. We were colleagues in the Chief State Solicitor's Office for many years. John was a fine colleague, able, willing and supportive. He was highly respected and enormously popular with everyone who knew him. My condolences to his family. May be rest in peace.

Sincere condolences to Charles, Martin, Paddy, Rosemary and the extended Kelly family on John's passing. John was some years my junior - a nodding aquaintance of a quiet and pleasant demeanor. I would never doubt he - as Hamlet said, had 'that within which passeth show; ..." attested here beyond doubt by the legion of CSSO members to his wide knowledge, captivating presence and fascination with life. A lot of water under the bridge since the late 1950s when I first looked at Kyle's Wood behind the Kelly home from my grandparents and watched their dog 'Tiger' chase infrequent cars along Park Road of the long ago. Again, may the Good Lord ease your sorrowful isolation and loss at John's passing

Was very saddened to hear of John's passing. He showed courage and strength for many years to battle his illness. He made light of it and it never seemed to get him down always maintaining his convivial conversations and humorous nature throughout.

John was a stalwart in the CSSO liked by everyone A friend, colleague and one of life's gentlemen. His knowledge and interest in current affairs, political and sporting matters was huge.
My thoughts are with his family at this time.

Very saddened to hear of John’s passing. He was a gentle person; very bright and knowledgeable. I spent six years in boarding school with John and never heard him speak ill of anyone or get into a confrontation; just shows the mark of the man.

There have been many lovely tributes to him here such as his warm friendship, his love of political discourse and history and his font of knowledge. But i think that his greatest characteristic that I will remember him for was his love for his grass roots, his sence of place and anything in the Green and Red. John, I'm sure you're sitting up there looking down on us all with a copy of the Western People by your side watching the Japan match, with a smile on your face delighting in a Knockman making his debut. When we retired he was the leading light in keeping our group together by organising lunches and coffee mornings , which were regular events where John excelled in discussing news events, history and sports. I have very fond memories of working with John in the CSSO, where he excelled as one of the most diligent people I've ever had the privilege to work with. I was honoured to be able to bring John to St. James's Hospital for treatment and he kept his wit and humour all along despite what he was going through! Rest in Peace my friend.

John and I remained in correspondence after rekindling contact at a pleasant, if noisy, Knock 1977 class drinks 'do' last June in Doheny and Nesbitt's. John's knowledge and appreciation of history particularly of the backgrounds of the present war in Ukraine and conflict in Gaza was grounded in substantial reading and thoughtful analysis........and which events deeply troubled him. A good man. God speed John.

I am very saddened to learn of John's passing. He has had a difficult few years, health wise, but made light of it, and was assiduous in maintaining contact with his friends post retirement. I visited him briefly last Sunday afternoon and it was clear that time was not on his side. I worked with John for many years in the Office of the Chief State Solicitor and he was always a good guy. Current affairs, Politics and America were his specialist topics. Sport also, of course. Go easy, John. You will be missed.
