John was my tutor at university, and I remember him and his classes fondly. We also worked together on a public commission in Louisburgh, where he showed us around and visited his family home. He brought great enthusiasm to his classes, and I fondly remember his disagreements with Robert, as together, they formed the basis for my art career.

I worked with John for many years in Portland Row and later in setting up, developing and working on the BAVA on Sherkin Island. As well as a valued colleague John was a good friend to me, my husband Fergus and to our daughter Róisín who would accompany me on college trips, where she often became John’s shadow. John was unfailingly kind to her, and to all students and taught with his heart. He became part of our community when he worked on Sherkin, and everyone is saddened by his untimely death.
Our deepest sympathy to John’s mother Maureen, his sisters Breda, Paula and Emer and girlfriend Sinéad.

To Maureen, Paula, Breda, Emer, Sinead, Robbie, Dónal, Diarmuid, Lughaidh, Rosa, Louisa, Iosaf, Saoirse and Líadan I am deeply sorry for your loss. John will be greatly missed.

We were lucky enough to share some wonderful evenings playing sessions with John and I have to say that I took so much away from hearing him speak. The music flowed out of him. As the Covid restrictions were starting to lift John organised some "Songs on the Mall". I will always think of John when I see the bench where we sang those songs. He was the man who started to bring music back into our lives by organising the outdoor meet ups.

When growing up I can recall passing by the Mayock's house peering through the back gate in amazement at what the John could be making. All the pieces of wood that would be lined up ready for him to sculpt into beautiful creations. The saw was the sound of an artist at work. It was a joy to get to know him later on in life.

The sad news has really shook me. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilís.
— John Cloherty

Very sad to hear that John has passed away. John contributed hugely to the Sherkin Island community over the years, with his work on the DIT Art course. Throughout his time working on the island, he made a great impression on those who were lucky to have known him.

As much as he loved West Cork, he was never shy in reminding us of his love for his home county of Mayo and took great joy in regularly reminding us of that.

John had an incredibly caring heart and always wanted the best for his Art students. He showed them kindness and support every chance he got. He always made time for a chat with the locals as he went about his work and encouraged them to get involved where possible. Islanders saw him as the gentleman he was, with a great sense of humor on top of everything else.

We were so fortunate that Mayo shared him with us for a while here on Sherkin Island.

Rest easy John.
— Mark Murphy
