John was a very learned man with deep interest in several pursuits not least history and politics. He was modest about this and generous in sharing his knowledge with others. He will be greatly missed by the several organisations in Westport to which he gave decades of dedicated service, leadership and commitment over his long life. What a lovely, hospitable and welcoming couple John and Barbara were. A deeply loyal man in so many ways.

Sincere condolences to Barbara on the passing of your husband, John.

What an amazing legacy he leaves behind. His knowledge was like an encyclopaedia of local and national history. John was a great community leader, much admired for his work with the farmers’ co-operative movement and the Westport Historical Society.

Through his meticulous research, he discovered that William Leeson was the architect who designed the town of Westport, and he was a tremendous help during the town’s 250th celebration in 2017.

It is truly heartening that the many conversations reflecting on his life will now be preserved on YouTube, thanks to Dr. Oliver Whyte.
