I would like to offer my sincere sympathy to John’s family. It was always a great pleasure to meet and work with John. He always gave his time and energy very generously to guidance counsellors and their students. I remember him with great affection.

My sincere condolences to John and all the McAvoy family on the death of your Dad - may he rest in peace.
In those early chaotic days of the NCPE one man became a beacon of normality and common sense. As admissions officer John had to deal with the politics of an avalanche of applications from the brightest and best of Ireland's youth..
John became a close and trusted friend to an English couple in 1973 Limerick. Collecting wood from the Shannon, camping holidays with John, Paddy and the children and the Sunday evening boards games. Wonderful memories of a kind and considerate man who was much loved and trusted.

To Paddy and family - I am shocked and saddened at the death of John. I will never forget John bouncing into me in my office in NUIG in summer 1982. He had heard (probably from you Paddy as a classmate) that I was very conflicted about which two subjects to drop after 1st arts and which to continue with to the B.A. He said 'do Economics- you wont regret it'. And yes I did listen and yes I don't regret it! Thanks John ! The effective 'machine' that is the CAO is a lasting legacy. Ar Dheis de a anam
Paddy and family, I am so sorry to hear the sad news. John was a consummate professional with a razor-sharp wit and a great story-teller. He always brought a smile to the proceedings. The need for transparency and fairness he instilled in the CAO system and processes remains today. A huge legacy. May he rest in peace.
Dear John, I will address this condolence to you while offering my sincere sympathy to your immediate family. I first met you in January 1979. I had applied for temporary work at the CAO at your busy period and ended up staying 9 months. From the moment you introduced yourself to us, I knew you were one of a kind, witty, perceptive, kind, generous with your time. You gave me great encouragement and advice and I will never forget you for it. You loved your family and while I only met you once or twice since then I will always remember you for the wonderful person you were. You touched the lives of many people and the world was a better place for your presence. Wherever you are now, be it the CAO in the sky or in everywhere we look, you will not be forgotten. May your memory be a blessing to your family and friends

Very sorry to hear of John's death and sincere condolences to Mrs. McAvoy, his children, grandchildren and all the family. John was a very highly regarded head of the CAO system, extremely detailed in his work and efficient to the last. He had a dry wit and was well known to all the Guidance Counselors during the time he worked from Maynooth - a model of how to be organised, careful and fair in all his dealings with student details who applied for access to Third Level Colleges and Universities and for assisting Guidance Counsellors, School Principals and the parents involved, who sought out his help and assistance when it was necessary.
