I first met John D in the 1980's as we were both involved in "Life & Pensions"; he with the NULIS and I with Shield Life. We had many interesting and prolonged discussions over the ensuing decades as our paths crossed in business, golf and socially, i.e. over a pint and a frame or two of snooker. John D was great company and he really enjoyed the "craic" with the best! Our 4 ball is now, sadly, a 3 ball and we are all the poorer for John's passing. The service last Friday morning was a fitting tribute to him and as Mary reflected in "He is gone" You can cherish his memory and let it live on.....and we will! Well spoken in their own words by Grace, John Paul and Michael even if some words of the latter brought admonishment from the PP.

Sincere sympathy to Mary and family on John's untimely passing. I worked under him at the start of my actuarial career and have very fond memories of his enthusiasm and good humour.

Mary and family, so saddened to hear the news. Our lovely friend we had so many great nights with in Los Naranjos. My memories of his rabbit stew and his rage at me for not making him a beef stew. The laughs remain with us and always at the end of the night a big song to cap it all. Rest easy John, you were great company. To Mary and all the family huge condolences for the loss of a big man.

How truly touching your send-off for John was. I may have never have met him, but know all about him from your wonderfully eloquent, and tender stories. How smart, lovely and fun he sounds, and how very loved he was so apparent. You did him proud, and will continue to do so. To Mary and all the family. I was John's Personal Assistant in Norwich Union for 8 years - throughout our 8 years we never had a cross word. He was a wonderful man and boss who gave me a confidence in my work that has carried me throughout life. I have spoken so many times about John over the years and always refer to him as the only true mensa I have ever met - I was working with John when he decided to learn the Irish National Anthem overnight. I have listened to your wonderful celebration of John's life; I can tell you one thing your dad failed at - no matter how hard he tried he couldn't get me to understand complex maths - much to his utter frustration as John never failed at anything! I left Norwich Union, to live abroad, when John left . I am sorry I didn't reconnect with John & Mary when I returned to Ireland but today it was lovely to hear the wonderful stories about his family life since Norwich Union. Your stories were wonderful for a wonderful man. May you all find comfort in those memories. Ruth O'Sullivan
