Sincere sympathy to you Sr Mary on the death of your brother, John. Condolences to his wife, Mary, children, grandchildren and extended family. May he rest in peace. Pat MacManus.
Má tá fírinne ar bith ag baint leis an leagan cainte sin 'slí na fírinne' níl aon amhras orm ach go bhfuil Seán ag gluaiseacht go sona ar an mbealach sin. Níor chuir mé aithne air go pearsanta go dtí go rabhamar araon ar scor. But he was instantly recognisable prior to that in any forays he made into Dalkey from Sandycove. There was an uaisleacht about him in his deportment. But it was in the Spoken Irish group on which we embarked almost simultaneously that his values shone through: in his informed pride in the environment in which he had operated professionally and in his value for the antiquity and nuances of the language including the Hibernian Irish dimension feted by Joyce.whose texts were on his shelves. Cora joins me in extending our great commiserations with Mary and all the members of this charming man's family.

Dear Mary, Ann and Micheal, We were greatly saddened to hear the sad news of John passing away. I was with Sinéad in Cambridge and we participated in the service through the computer screen. You all gave him a great send off and he would be delighted by the obvious love and affection displayed for him and all his friends and colleagues turning out. He was a great man and loved life.

May your dad rest in peace.
Heartfelt condolences to Mary and family at the loss of such a lovely and caring man. His endless patience playing bridge with me despite my appalling memory for cards in contrast to his phenomenal card skills, followed by two pints of Guinness in consolation on the way home, are particular treasured memories of a lovely friend.

I am another of John's engineering classmates. Although it is 50 years since we graduated and I last saw him, he left a mark on me as a friend for his good humour, patience and intellect. As Kevin and Mervyn have said he always wore a 3-piece suit. I wondered whether he had no other clothes or was he setting himself up as an alternative role model to Beverly StJohn Vaughan!!
My condolences to all the family; I know he will be sorely missed.

Sincere sympathy to Mary & family. My enduring memory of John was the day we hitched, along with Frank McGlynn, to Cherry's Brewery in Waterford for an Engineer's outing. As I recall we did part of the journey in the back of a truck. Yes, John had a 3 piece suit on, as always.

I was in the same class as John from infants in the Convent school in Macroom until he and his family left for Dublin a good many years later. We lost contact until a few years ago when we met up again in Dublin and later in Macroom where we reminisced and revisited old haunts of our youth. It was a joy to spend time together again.

Sincere sympathies to the family - John was always a larger than life character from my early days in DLR and his humour and energetic presence was uplifting. His swan song for DLR in the form of his story, or rather many stories of the M50 and 'The Road Delivered' went down in history as did his adopted/superimposed gladitorial pose for his farewell which spoke volumes for the shared respect and good spirits he inspired . He will be missed .
