It was a saddening experience indeed when I read on RIP.ie that Johnny had died. We were in school together nearly seventy years ago, attending the three-roomed structure run by the Mercy Nuns, long sine demolished to make way for changes to the Shannon Chapel. Who can forget the character-forming efforts of Miss Hiney(Babies), Sr. Imelda( Senior Infants)or Sr. Eithne(First Class)?
I can recall Johnny being carried into the CBS Primary School building by teacher Tom O'Shea after he had suffered a serious leg injury in the school-yard during morning break.
I can also recall the first-class work he did for Michael Thorpe in renovating some houses at the foot of Rectory Road.
