Thank you John for being such a good friend and pleasure to be with. I have many vivid memories of learning about rugby, Guiness, and contemporary issues. You had a.wonderful heart, sharp mind, and lovely, self deprecating sense of humor. My best wishes go to your family and friends. Forever in friendship…..Paul

My heartfelt sympathy to Mairead on the sudden passing of her beloved John, and to Dara
and all of the Mc Garty family.

John and I first became friends in Letterkenny in 1976. Life dictated that 3 decades would
pass before we met again when John moved to Carrick-on-Shannon in 2009 and an enduring
friendship was reignited.

What a privilege it was to have John as a friend. He was intelligent and articulate,
possessing a terrific grasp of detail and he had an extraordinary ability to recall events, faces
and names. John was thus perfectly armed to engage in discussion/debate with anyone
with whom he came in contact, as he so often did. I so enjoyed spending time with John
and meeting him and Mairead socially.
John was a very sociable gentleman, kindly and genuinely interested in people. He was
always humorous and witty, although never ever in a hurtful way. He sometimes received
serious ‘slagging’ over his apparel. I remember the pink summer shorts and the briefly seen
(and hastily disgarded) ‘manbag’! No one enjoyed the fun and ribbing more than John.
Such memories keep those we knew close to us long after their physical departure.
It is scarcely believable that we are henceforth to be bereft of John’s imposing presence,
intelligence and that wonderfully distinctive laugh.

John, on some future day, I will once more hear the salutation “Good to see you man”.
