Dear Mary, John, Suzanne, Linda and Dan,

Though I never had the chance to meet Da (John) in person, I have no doubt he was a wonderful man, given the love and admiration surrounding him. I like to think that right now, he’s up in heaven, meeting my mum, Shahlah. And knowing how much she adored Dan, his homemade brew, and a good Irish tune, they’re probably sharing a drink, swapping stories, and singing along to some lively Irish music.

Wishing you strength and comfort during this time, and may the memories of John bring you peace. Sending you all lots of love and light.

Dear Grandad,

The last few days i’ve gone through each memory I have of you, not one could I remember negatively, brought a smile to my face reliving these memories in my head, you really were the best of the best. I will forever miss seeing you in those Skype calls with Nana, it’ll never be the same without you. I’ll forever miss you, until the day we speak again, I love you Grandad.

I’m really going to miss you. I’ll always remember how much I loved coming up to visit you and playing games with you especially dominos and we’d sit in the kitchen and I’d be shouting because I lost the game and you would be laughing at me. You were always so much fun to be around, ❤️

Dear Grandad John,
I couldn’t have asked for a better Grandad, you always loved us no matter what.

I planned to make a trip back home this year to spend Christmas with you and the family, but unfortunately time was not on our side. In 2018 when we last visited, we arrived and I ran into your arms, you hugged me tightly. I will never forget that. We walked around the Dublin Mountains, visited the Hellfire Club and took a trip to Bray. When it came to the end of our trip we had to say goodbye. I never thought that would be the last time I would see you, the last time that we hugged, but I will cherish those memories forever.

I miss those Sunday calls with you and Nana where we would update each other on our lives and spend Christmas morning together on video call. No matter how far apart we were you and Nana were always there.

Thank you for always telling me how proud you are of me, I hope that I can continue to make you proud. I would do anything to hug you again. When my time comes, I know that you will be there waiting for me with that hug. Until then I will keep you in my heart every day.

My condolences are with everyone who loves Grandad. I am sending love to Nana Mary, my parents; John and Sandra, my siblings; John Daniel and Jemma, and my extended family. We’ll miss him forever, as time goes on the pain will ease and we can look back on our memories of Grandad with a smile.

I never truly knew how fast something or someone could be taken away from you, my mind will always run with “what ifs” and “how comes” but no amount of questions will ever lead to the answer I need. One day we will all find peace within the grief, but regardless he will forever be in our hearts through every step of the way. John McKeon is everything I could’ve asked for in a grandfather and I will forever be grateful for him. But now he can rest in peace knowing his family has him in our hearts. As my last Farewell to my Grandad I wrote him a poem,

I never truly knew how fast it could go,

How something or someone could leave without a show,

This feeling will never seem true,

As I never thought it would be you,

So for now our hearts hang low,

Filled with love and sorrow.
