We are sending our deepest sympathy to John's family and to Shane and his colleagues at deBlacam and Meagher.
Like so many, Amalia and I were one of the many young architects to pass through the hallowed 'basement' of the Raglan Road office. We will always remember his wit; his colourful anecdotes made many an afternoon slip effortlessly into the evening.

John was one of many gifted architects I had the privilege of working with as a planner in Dublin City, but collaborating with him was a particular pleasure because of his superb design skills, generosity of spirit, and good humour. My sympathy to his family, friends and colleagues in de Blacam and Meagher.
Sending sincerest condolences to you Mrs Meagher and to Anne & David and all the family & friends on John’s death. RIP. Paul had so many fond memories of happy times with the Meagher’s.
So sorry to read of John's passing. He was such a positive person. I studied architecture with John, in Dublin, in the 1970's.
John, would some years, travel to the USA during the summer holidays, to gain architecture experience. I having worked also for 3 months, in the States, then embarked on a one month Greyhound Bus tour. John said if I passed through Philadelphia, to make contact. I rang John from a bus station in North Carolina, at mid-day, and he gave me directions to his office when I arrived. We met, and John bought me a lovely lunch. I will always remember his friendship.
May John's great soul rest in peace.

The last time I met John we were struggling across yet another a bridge in Venice, he immediately invited myself and a friend to join him for lunch and for a few hours the world seemed a more fascinating, colourful and magical place with an enormous potential for beauty that I glimpsed only on such occasions. Thank you John. My sincere condolences to his family, may he rest in peace.

Our deepest condolences to the Meagher family all who are feeling the sad loss of John from our lives. His annual presence in Bóthar Buí over the August weekend will be sorely missed, the 4 pm arrival in the kitchen, the 4 am recital of the Mullinahone tale... Inimitable, generous in every way - particularly with his insights. The memory of John will continue to enrich and entertain us. His effects on our lives will, for sure, 'never rest'.

We are devastated by the loss of our dear friend John. So many fond memories of him visiting us in Chicago and enjoying long evenings sampling my cocktails, dining, and laughing into the morning. Such a very very special person who left us too soon. We will keep him in our hearts always and forever.
From slide shows of Aalto to glistening white island architecture, John was a consummate guide and mentor. The former hallowed halls of The Terrace send their fond farewell.

John’s passing evoked many childhood memories:
His lengthy visits to our house in Blessington and our return trips to his family home on Woodbine Road in Dublin were ones of great adventure and fun. John ,Barry and Anne were the “groundbreakers” for our family back then. They introduced us to swimming in the Blackrock baths, and they brought us on our first trip into town on the 46A bus. They accompanied us to parties and introduced us to city life! They joined us on many wonderful family holidays. John being the older cousin brought us all to the pictures on numerous occasions in my fathers car. At a later stage we started horse riding lessons together when he decided to up-skill in equine pursuits. He was the designer of our beautiful house in Blessington where we still live. He oozed kindness, generosity, knowledge and a great passion for the arts.
We will miss you John.

«In farewell sound»
Poem by José Hierro,
from ‘Cuaderno de Nueva York’
I did not come just to tell you
(although also) that I will never return,
and that I can never forget you.
I undertake the task
(impossible, if something is impossible)
to rationalize, interpret, reconstruct and retrace those fables and spells
that thanks to you they were reality.
I recover the steps started on the river bank and that ended in "Kiss Bar" (although I'm not
sure where was the beginning and where the end).
I have lived radiant days
thank you.
Between my fingers they slipped crystal clear hours, pure water.
Blessed be
It was a third degree prison:
you go back to jail at night,
by day - mirage - you feel free, free, free.
No one could, nor can, nor will forever and ever take away so much happiness.
I have not come ―I told you―
to say goodbye to you.
I don't bother you anymore (I don't even know if you listen to me).
I drink the last whiskey at the Kiss Bar
the last margarita in "Santa Fe",
I then surround the city and its wall of water in which there is nothing left that was mine.
I give up going into its enclosure,
I don't have the strength to celebrate
the melancholy liturgy of separation
I just want to sleep, sleep
maybe dream ...

So sad to hear the news of John’s passing. He was a lovely man. Condolences to his family. We will miss him .
Mrs Meagher, Anne and Shane
I fin d it difficult to think that I will not see John's infectious smile again. Having know John and indeed Barry since school days I will be left with very happy memories even though there may have been long intervening gaps in our meeting. I particularly remember a long hot Sunday afternoon afternoon at the dedication of the first Church that John designed in the greater Tallaght area which lasted for several hours. We were admirably rewarded for our endurance with wonderful hospitality in Woodbine long in to the early hours of Monday morning.
Another fond memory of John and indeed Shane is when you joined you in hunting with the South County Dublin Harriers. John ended up with a knee injury and ended up in St. Vincent's Hospital.
His enthusiasm and verve for life never deserted him until recently. I know that it is these qualities that will help you to retain lovely images that will help you in to the future.
My sincere condolences.

Sincere sympathies to you Mrs. Meagher, Anne & Family on the passing of dear John. I met John in my teens and have so many happy memories and enjoyed following his architectural success, such vision plus a really nice guy. He also influenced my life path by bringing me to the first ROSC Exhibition at the RDS in '67. Yes we were both 20yrs, and no better guide to enlighten me. He didn't realise how special he was.
I was so saddened to read of Johns death.,He was my tutor in UCD when I returned as a mature student. He was so talented and a great communicator, I loved his lectures,
