Sincere sympathy to each of the Moynahan family on the passing of John.
Its not until later in life you learn to look back and reflect on people in life that stand out and leave a lasting impression on you as John did. He was so much more than a teacher, He demonstrated a rare quality to focus on students who fell outside or lagged a bit behind the social & educational norm. A subtle eye and soft spoken words of encouragement mixed with praise of pupil self worth felt like a conversation with a dear friend more than a teacher all whilst without drawing attention of other class students was a gift that only he had. We did not always make it easy for him, and for that I apologize, but he never lost resilience. Every class was about giving every adolescent boy the best education, words of guidance, encouragement, values of self worth he could.
For that I will always be truly grateful.

I was deeply saddened to hear of John’s passing. He taught me and my two brothers during our years in St. Michael’s, and we were all fortunate to have learned from him. John was an exceptional teacher — dedicated, knowledgeable, and genuinely committed to the wellbeing and success of every pupil who passed through his classroom.

What always stood out was the interest he took in each of us as individuals. He encouraged, supported, and pushed us to be our best, and he did so with a kindness and decency that left a lasting impression. Many of us owe our paths in life to the foundation he helped lay.

John was, in every sense, a gentleman. He will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of being taught by him.

I fondly remember the years in St. Michael’s College in both his Business and Accounting classes which I always eagerly looked forward to. I send my condolences to you and just want to add to the wonderful tributes paid by the former pupils of St Michaels. I am sure they are some consolation to you at this time.

I'd meet John from time to time in Tralee, and he always had time to enquire as to how former pupils were doing. He'd remind me that I ended up as an accountant in Blennerville, not far from his home in Derrymore. But Im sure there are past pupils all over the world, that can trace their influence to John.

I credit him for my 2 honours in the leaving cert and was delighted he appreciated me qualifying as a chartered accountant.

Sincere condolences to John's family. Mr. Moynihan taught me in St. Michael's College in the 80s and he was a wonderful, caring man, a true gentleman. He was dedicated to his job and an inspiration to many students. I remember him waiting outside the examination hall on a warm afternoon after we completed our Leaving Cert Accounting paper, which showed the genuine interest in had in his students and their welfare.

Mr Moynihan was an exceptional teacher in St Michael’s College. His enthusiasm and care for his chosen subject was inspiring to so many of his students. The 5 years I spent in Johns class still guide me today, over 30 years later.

Mr Moynihan was also a faithful work colleague of my late father John.

"Debit the Receiver, credit the Giver", drummed into us a thousand times at St. Michael's, Listowel by Mr. Moynihan. We received; he gave and gave and gave until he was blue in the face! The weaker you were, the more he gave. I loved and looked forward to his classes for 5 years in the eighties. He treated adolescents as adults and celebrated with a gentle, well-placed word of encouragement when he saw that your balance sheet balanced out. He coaxed the immature of us with no interest in books to believe that we could all succeed and make use of what he taught us and he never gave up on any of us, sowing the seeds of good manners, honesty, humility and self-belief that would ripen like a long-term investment in our minds as we grew up and he was no longer around to thank personally. He was truly a Great Man and a Great Teacher, not only of his subjects, but also of life. My sincere condolences to his dear family and friends left behind.
