So sad to hear of the passing of John.

A native of Sligo, every trip from Melbourne, I would visit John in the shop and have built up quite a collection of hats, as suggested by John!

Deepest sympathies to the Mullaney family on the passing of John. I only ever had the pleasure of meeting John once and he left a lasting impression on me. An absolute gentleman and the greatest salesperson I have ever encountered. I still have the photo I took with him after buying far more than I intended to upon entering the shop ;) A very smart, funny and kind man. May he rest in peace.

Dear Mullaney and extended family,

Your shop on O'Connell street was an important cornerstone in our family. In fact your goods and wares became the fabric of our lives. I bought all of dad's presents in the shop eventually. He particularly loved your selection of jumpers. He even wore one to his grave, rest his soul. My aunt would always visit when she came to Sligo from Germany. The shop was famous there, that's for sure. And this of course through the lovely presence of John.
The presence of a loving generational family business in any community is what makes life so wonderful. So thank you from us all for sharing that with us throughout the world.

John's support for The Yeats Summer School was unwavering.

A legend in Sligo retailing. Renowned for his friendly and courteous approach to customers, both young and old.
Also his love of Sligo, Yeats, art and local history. A gentleman to the end. Rest in peace John, you will be missed.
It was with a sense of deep regret that I read of John’s passing. One of the pillars of not only the commercial life of Sligo town but also its cultural heartbeat too; John appeared to be an immutable, changeless figure of Sligo society, impervious to the march of time. A fellow member of the ‘Rag Trade’, and with both customers and suppliers in common, an interesting conversation could be banked upon when my parents and he would meet either at trade shows or on O’Connell St. It touched me that, after the sale of our business in Manorhamilton and my fathers death some years later, any time I met John on my visits home to the north west, he always asked after my mother. A gentleman to his very core. Through his cultural and business interests, his concern for people, gentle demeanour and irrepressible good humour, John accomplished what all should aspire to but few of us have or will achieve, and left this world a richer place than he found it. To his family and friends, I extend my sincerest condolences.

(Scott Golden, Wicklow and formerly of T. A. Golden, Manorhamilton.)
