My sincere condolences to the Murphy family. John was a lovely, hardworking, kind man with lots of stories to tell. He welcomed me to his house 15 years ago and gave me as a young man a great start to living in Ireland. He will be truly missed.

The first memory I have of John is hearing a male voice downstairs from my bedroom in Clive Road. I ran down thinking it was my dad, yelling ”dad is home”. It’s funny thinking about this because little did I know then that this person would be my new father and change the trajectory of my life not once but twice.
Before we moved to Ireland he taught me to ride a bike without stabilisers, and to how shift gears in the car whilst he was driving. I remember whenever we sat in the car waiting for someone or something, we’d play memory games, riddles and other puzzles.

Growing up we didn’t always see eye to eye but there was mutual love.

He instilled in me the values of independence, a hard work ethic, the value of money and time, as well as critical thinking. Just roll up your sleeves and get it done, he always seamed fearless and encouraged us face everything head on.

I’ll never forget the smell of tobacco mixed with leather, and a hint of plaster.

John was the type of person who would do anything to help someone out, even few years back I found myself in an uncertain situation and he was the first person to stand up and offer help.

He always had a story to tell and we all have our stories to share about the time we shared with him.
