I’m very sad to hear of John’s death. My sincere condolences to Brendan, Pauline & Ethna & extended family. He was a special man who was a joy to talk to, full of local detail & zest for life. A wonderful joyful memory I have is of John & his mother taking my mother & I to midnight mass in Athlone at Christmas. A great neighbour & May he rest in peace.

We wish to offer our most sincere sympathies to Brendan on the sad passing of your Dad John. He is the end of an era, the end of that unique stock of people who worked so hard all their lives and who truely deserve to reap their eternal rewards.
John was such a great historian and any time I got the pleasure of chatting to him he would tell you great stories of the great Meitheal of local men and women who completely took on the meaning of "great neighbour" in its entireity. He would recall every man, woman and child who helped out at threshing and at hay making with great pleasure.
I am sure that all these hard working souls have welcomed John into The Kingdom Of Heaven which is their final Meitheal.

John, his mother, Josephine and Brendan hosted me on a 1972 visit and later with my family in 1983. My father Gerry and his brother Frank departed Ireland for Australia in 1925.
