Such a loss. I really only knew John through his bookshop. Shops like his are special places, and he invariably had a word or a chat on what you were reading and why. He would order you any book you wanted and always followed up with a phone call or message to let you know it had arrived.

My heart broke when I heard of John passing. I watched the funeral last night and it still doesn’t make sense or feel real. John was a great friend to me over the years- we stayed in touch and I will miss him and his wicked sense of humour. His smile and the sound of his giddy laugh will live long in everyone’s memory.

Talking about books was our way of connecting with John, like sharing a glass of the finest wine to celebrate something that transcends the senses: the love for books. John was one of the most significant people in Kenmare, an essential being, a "kindred spirit". For my daughters and me, he was a genuine representative of the Irish spirit. He didn't judge, he didn't let prejudices or preconceptions get in the way; his mind and heart were open to the ideas of others, to the homelands and cultures of others. He was a person who illuminated everything with his smile, for whom the question "How are you?" wasn't just a simple greeting. He always awaited the answer and listened attentively and empathetically. When my daughters and I arrived in Ireland in 2010, with only a basic level of English, he wasn't impatient as was often the case with other native speakers. Little by little, he acknowledged our progress, and he was always happy to hear about our lives and our achievements. I'm sure every friend and customer could tell a similar story. Here from Sweden and Austria, we listened to the funeral mass with tears in our eyes. Many books in our library bear the imprint of a smile, moments that transcended an ordinary purchase. The bookstore wasn't just a business; it was a refuge. May you rest in the embrace of eternity, John, may you soar to the realm of perpetual joy.
